Coffee prices continued to fall today as traders awaited details on the possibility of the US reducing or waiving tariffs on products that cannot be grown domestically. In addition, the recovery of the US dollar and concerns about surplus continued to put pressure on prices of this agricultural commodity.
According to diplomatic sources, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira met with his US counterpart Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the G7 meeting on November 13 to discuss progress in tariff negotiations. The exchange took place just hours after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed that Washington would soon make “important announcements” aimed at reducing prices of non-domestic products, including coffee.
The two foreign ministers are scheduled to meet again in Washington on November 14 to advance trade discussions. However, according to expert Michael J. Nugent, what the market lacks is clarity on the US position. Washington currently imposes a 50% tariff on coffee from Brazil, which produces nearly half of the world's arabica and supplied a third of the green coffee consumed in the US last year.

Tariffs and a poor harvest have caused Brazil’s green coffee exports to fall more than 20% in October, with shipments to the U.S. alone plunging 54%. Some traders estimate that arabica futures are trading about 70 cents a pound higher than they would be without tariffs, with the market waiting for signs of a tariff cut to adjust.
In the US, roasted coffee prices rose 41% year-on-year in September, adding to inflationary pressures and impacting the Trump administration’s credit rating. Against this backdrop, StoneX forecasts Brazil’s 2026/27 coffee production could reach 70.7 million bags, up 13.5%, with arabica recovering strongly but robusta continuing to decline due to farming issues and aging trees.
