World coffee prices fall sharply due to pressure from USD and interest rate expectations
At the end of the most recent trading session, coffee prices on both major exchanges fell sharply at the beginning of the week. The reason was that the harvest in Vietnam is accelerating and the rising USD has pushed coffee prices down.
London Exchange (Robusta): Robusta coffee price for January 2026 delivery decreased by 77 USD/ton to 4,218 USD/ton. Contract for March 2026 delivery decreased by 86 USD/ton to 4,092 USD/ton.
New York Exchange (Arabica): Arabica coffee price for December 2025 delivery decreased by 10.2 cents/lb to 396.05 cents/lb. Contract for March 2026 delivery decreased by 8.65 cents/lb to 366.2 cents/lb.
The US dollar rose as markets entered a week of central bank meetings, highlighted by the Federal Reserve (Fed). Although the market was almost certain that the Fed would cut interest rates, investors were still bracing for the possibility that the easing cycle would be softer than expected. In the early morning of December 9, the US Dollar Index (DXY) measuring the greenback's volatility increased 0.12% to 99.11.
Domestically, after a long period of being at a record level, coffee prices have dropped sharply in the past month due to the harvest season. Currently, prices are about 15,000 - 17,000 VND/kg lower than last month.
However, Mr. Do Ha Nam, Vice President of the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (VICOFA), said that coffee prices are unlikely to fall sharply. The two recent high-price crops have helped farmers to hold onto their stocks and not sell them in large quantities. He predicted that Robusta prices will likely remain above 4,000 USD/ton, making it difficult for domestic prices to fall below 80,000 VND/kg.
