December is always the peak harvest season for Vietnamese coffee, accounting for more than half of the year's output, so prices are often low. Previously, businesses often bought heavily during this time to stock up and then sell gradually throughout the year, but now due to high capital pressure, many units have switched to buying in batches to reduce risks. The amount of coffee in stock is also widely dispersed in small warehouses of farmers, making the supply on the market no longer as concentrated as before.
Domestic consumption is forecast to increase to 4.9 million bags, reflecting the growing appeal of the domestic coffee market. A growing coffee culture, rising incomes and a young, urbanized population are driving demand for new product experiences. While exports remain the mainstay, the domestic market is becoming an increasingly important part of the consumption mix.
The average annual coffee consumption per capita is also increasing rapidly and is expected to reach 3 kg this year. Busy lifestyles and long working hours have increased the demand for instant coffee, due to its convenience and suitability to modern living habits.
According to a report by Knowledge Sourcing Intelligence, the Vietnamese instant coffee market is expected to grow steadily at a CAGR of 12%, reaching a size of about 731 million USD by 2028. This is considered a major driving force for the coffee industry, in parallel with traditional export activities.

According to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam, the total coffee area in 2024 will reach 732,000 hectares, of which 677,000 hectares will be harvested. PPPD forecasts that the coffee growing area in 2025 will be around 730,000 hectares and may increase to 731,000 hectares in 2026. This is a slight increase, reflecting the stability of the country's coffee growing areas.
The Central Highlands alone – Vietnam’s largest coffee-producing region – is estimated to have 676,500 hectares of coffee by 2025, with an expected output of 1.9 million tons. However, the replanting progress is slow, with only 74,500 hectares being renewed under the Coffee Replanting Program, while the plan is 91,000 hectares.
The Replanting Program was established with the goal of replanting 200,000 hectares of coffee in the 2014–2025 period, equivalent to about one-third of the total coffee area in the Central Highlands. This is a major effort to improve productivity and quality by supporting farmers to replace old coffee plantations with new, more efficient varieties.
This policy also comes with credit packages and technical support, helping farmers access modern farming technology. The timely replanting is expected to improve the quality of raw materials, stabilize output and create a foundation for sustainable development for the coffee industry in the coming years.
