Coffee price today December 9: Price drops sharply, robusta down to lowest in more than 2 months

Coffee prices fell sharply in the first trading session of the week as Arabica prices fell to a two-week low while Robusta prices hit a more than two-month low amid prospects of abundant supply.

On the London floor, continuing the downward trend, the price of robusta coffee futures contract for January 2026 delivery decreased by 77 USD/ton (-1.78%) to 4,218 USD/ton, while the futures contract for March 2026 delivery decreased by 86 USD/ton (-2.05%) to 4,092 USD/ton.

Meanwhile, on the New York floor, Arabica coffee prices also fell, with the December 2025 contract falling sharply by 10.2 US cents/pound (-2.5%) compared to the previous session to 396.05 US cents/pound. The March 2026 contract fell by 8.65 cents/pound (-2.3%) to 366.2 US cents/pound.

Coffee prices fell sharply as the market came under pressure from the prospect of abundant supplies.

The recent decline reflects expectations that Vietnam will harvest its biggest robusta crop in four years, despite persistent heavy rains.

Vietnam’s November coffee exports are estimated to have increased nearly 40% year-on-year to 88,000 tons, Bloomberg and Barchart reported, citing data from the General Statistics Office. Cumulatively, 11-month shipments increased 15% year-on-year to 1.398 million tons, reinforcing forecasts of expanded supply.

These figures are in line with market expectations and, according to a report by I & M Smith Ltd., are “confirmation that domestic coffee flows are returning to normal levels as the new crop approaches.”

Meanwhile, last Thursday, Brazil's crop forecasting agency Conab also raised its estimate of the country's 2025 coffee production by 2.4% to 56.54 million bags, compared to 55.20 million bags in its September forecast.

If confirmed, this would be the third highest production in the history of the Brazilian coffee industry, behind only 2018 and 2020. Conab said in its previous report that it had only forecast a 1.8% increase compared to 2024.

Conab explained that the new increase was mainly due to favorable climatic conditions and improved productivity, reaching 30.4 bags/ha, in the context of a 1.2% decrease in coffee growing area compared to the same period last year.
