Brazil exported 4.66 million 60-kg bags of coffee in November, up 5.4% from the same period in 2023. In the first 11 months of 2024, Brazil exported a record of nearly 46.4 million bags, up 3.78% from the peak recorded in 2020, and up 32.2% from the same period last year, according to the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Association (CECafe).
Coffee price today 12/31/2024
World coffee prices continued to decline slightly on both the London and New York exchanges. Robusta coffee prices fell below the $5,000 threshold, hitting a three-week low. Arabica coffee prices hit their lowest in two weeks.
Domestic coffee prices today, December 31, fluctuated between VND120,000 and VND120,500 per kilogram. In Vietnam, unseasonal rains continue to affect coffee harvesting and processing. According to local sources, 20-30% of the output has not yet been harvested and there are concerns that the rain could affect the quality of the coffee beans.
International markets have been quiet this week due to holidays in many major producing countries, while the weather has also been more favorable in Brazil. Meanwhile, the New Year holiday (Wednesday, January 1, 2025) in many countries in the middle of the week is likely to keep the market quiet this week, with New York and London markets both closed and set to resume trading on Thursday, January 2, 2025.
Coffee prices were pressured by recent above-average rainfall in Brazil, easing concerns about drought. Brazil’s largest arabica coffee growing region, Minas Gerais, recorded 102.8 mm of rain last week, or 182% of the historical average, according to Brazilian meteorological agency Somar Meteorologia.
Increased coffee supplies have also weighed on prices, after ICE-monitored arabica stocks hit a two-and-a-half-year high of 991,080 bags on Dec. 30. A weakening Brazilian real has also hurt coffee prices, with the real now just above its recent record low against the dollar. The real has lost 8.8 percent of its value against the dollar since early December. A weaker real encourages Brazilian coffee producers to boost exports, bringing more coffee to the market.
Thus, the increase in standard inventories has been a factor that has put slight pressure on both exchanges in the past week. Not only Arabica, Robusta coffee inventories also increased to a 2.5-month high, reaching 4,286 lots on December 27 last week.
According to market analysts, the downward trend on the two coffee exchanges last week and will continue at least early this week, also due to the large business performance on the two exchanges, especially London. Therefore, at the time of the new year, capital on the exchange is easily regulated by financial investors to other exchanges. In addition, on the exchange, speculators still increase liquidation sales to lock in profits after a year of good coffee growth. At the end of the year, business owners manage capital to withdraw profits to spend. In addition, many import-export traders are looking for ways to escape the futures exchange because the small retail paper trading force is too strong, pushing the prices of these two exchanges too high, causing billions of dollars in losses for professional coffee traders.
Therefore, the buying and selling power on the two paper coffee exchanges may gradually decrease during this time, due to the absence of this important force. However, many experts believe that in 2025, the opportunity for Vietnamese coffee is still very large when the world's leading coffee producing country, Brazil, will reduce production. The Vietnamese coffee industry had a very successful year when exports exceeded the 5 billion USD mark in both the crop year and the calendar year.
