Chicken and egg prices have dropped sharply.

VTV.vn - According to the Southeast Vietnam Livestock Association, the sharp drop in chicken and egg prices recently is mainly due to a significant increase in supply while consumption is recovering slowly.

Egg prices have fallen to unprecedented lows.

In Ho Chi Minh City, since the beginning of the year, the price of chicken eggs in traditional markets has remained low, commonly ranging from 20,000 to 25,000 VND per dozen. At some points, the price dropped to only 15,000 to 20,000 VND per dozen. Recently, the price has continued to fall, with many street vendors selling them for as low as 30,000 VND for 30 dozen, an unprecedented low, causing heavy losses for poultry farmers.

Businesses report that egg prices have fallen significantly compared to the same period last year due to stalled exports to Cambodia, resulting in an oversupply in the domestic market. Additionally, the period after the Lunar New Year is typically a low season for egg consumption. The combined effect of these two factors has led to a sharp drop in egg prices.

However, the ultra-cheap products on the market are actually cold storage stock from some large companies that couldn't sell or export them in time. Releasing them in large quantities further exacerbates the market downturn.

Livestock farmers are facing two pressures.

Not only in Ho Chi Minh City, but also in many key poultry farming areas in the Southeast region, the prices of chicken and eggs have continuously dropped sharply, at times equaling or even falling below the production cost. However, the price for consumers has not decreased accordingly. Farmers are facing two pressures: high input costs and sluggish consumer demand.

In Dong Nai , one of the country's major poultry farming regions, the price of colored-feathered chickens at farms is currently only around 42,000-45,000 VND/kg, about 15% lower than the same period last year. The price of broiler chickens also remains low, commonly at 25,000-27,000 VND/kg, close to the production cost.

Meanwhile, the price of poultry eggs at farms is currently only 1,000-1,600 VND per egg. At this price, many farms estimate they are losing about 500 VND per egg.

According to the Southeast Vietnam Livestock Association, the sharp drop in chicken and egg prices recently is mainly due to a significant increase in supply while consumption is recovering slowly.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ngoc, Vice Chairman of the Southeast Vietnam Livestock Association, said: "Last year, eggs were expensive, but this year people rushed to raise a lot of chickens, causing the price to drop. Supply and demand don't meet because we sell through middlemen and don't have a distribution system, so the market price is high while the farm price is low."

"To raise the selling price for farmers, the only way is to link the supply chain so that eggs reach consumers, minimizing the number of intermediaries. Only then can we solve this problem," said Mr. Le Van Quyet, Vice Chairman of the Dong Nai City Poultry Association.

Amidst prolonged oversupply and weak consumption, experts advise farmers to be cautious in restocking their herds, while businesses should focus on developing exports of processed products to increase value.
