From empty hands to the 'king of livestock' in Lao Cai
Starting with nothing nearly 30 years ago, Mr. Le Manh Quy, a farmer in Bao Thang commune (Lao Cai), has now built a chain of closed pig farms that meet VietGAP standards, becoming a typical model of modern mountainous agriculture.
In 1999, after many years of working for hire and struggling to make a living, Mr. Quy decided to raise pigs. Lack of capital and technology caused him to continuously suffer losses, but with a strong will, he diligently learned and accumulated experience from breeding to care and disease prevention. In 2015, he founded Quy Hien Livestock Cooperative, gathering like-minded households, applying VietGAP processes and biological waste treatment technology, both ensuring productivity and protecting the environment.
To date, the Cooperative maintains more than 500 sows, providing breeds for 5 pig farms with a scale of about 6,000 pigs/litter, with a stable revenue of over 100 million VND per day. The closed model helps the Cooperative to be 100% self-sufficient in breeding stock, reduce production costs by 40%, and save billions of VND per year.
Not only is he good at business, Mr. Quy also creates jobs for 30 local workers, shares techniques and supports breeding animals to help many households escape poverty. Looking to the future, he continues to invest in IoT applications, automates barns and builds a meat processing plant to complete the value chain.
Mr. Quy simply shared: "Raising pigs must be done scientifically and with heart to be sustainable."
