Nghe An proactively prevents epidemics, maintains growth momentum of livestock industry
Nghe An is currently one of the localities with the largest livestock scale in the country with more than 800,000 buffaloes and cows; over 85,000 dairy cows of large enterprises such as TH and Vinamilk; about 1 million pigs and 38 million poultry. Despite facing rising material prices, unfavorable weather and complicated disease developments, the province's livestock industry still maintains growth, reaching 5.39% in 2024. The proportion of pure livestock in agriculture is currently about 48.6%.
However, challenges remain as small-scale, uncontrolled livestock farming continues to be the cause of disease outbreaks. By 2025, many dangerous diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease, avian influenza, lumpy skin disease and especially African swine fever will continue to develop complicatedly, putting great pressure on disease control work.
Faced with this situation, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Nghe An province has proactively advised the Provincial People's Committee to synchronously deploy epidemic prevention and control solutions. Since the end of 2024, the province has issued a 2025 epidemic prevention plan, along with three urgent dispatches and a directive to tighten management. The leaders of the Provincial People's Committee directly inspected the field and directed response measures; working groups of the Department of Agriculture and Environment were also sent to the grassroots to urge implementation.
Thanks to the coordinated efforts, dangerous epidemics such as avian influenza, foot-and-mouth disease, and lumpy skin disease have been basically controlled. However, African swine fever is still complicated in some localities, with the potential risk of recurrence and requiring closer monitoring in the coming time.
