Responding to new risks with biosecurity solutions

According to the Agriculture and Environment newspaper, the project "Reducing the risk of human-animal interactions through disease control and biosecurity (BSI) initiatives in pig farming" led by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) was approved by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) in Decision No. 899/QD-BNN-HTQT dated February 25, 2025.

The project is funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), implemented in 2025 - 2026 in the two provinces of Ha Tinh and Ba Ria - Vung Tau (now Ho Chi Minh City), with a total aid capital received and directly managed by Vietnam of 140,000 USD.

The overall objective of the Project is to enhance management capacity and improve the effectiveness of surveillance systems and food safety assurance solutions to prevent and minimize the impact of zoonotic disease risks, emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance and other biological threats affecting animal and human health in livestock value chains, contributing to sustainable livestock development.

The specific objective of the Project is to apply the “Planned Food Safety Improvement - PMP” approach to at least 2 small and medium-sized pig farming chains, thereby providing measures to ensure food safety in farming and limit the spread of diseases.

In addition, a document guiding the development of a food safety plan and a guide to evaluating and monitoring the implementation of the food safety plan for pig farms belonging to the group of small and medium-sized farms was developed.
