The remaining provinces and cities maintain purchasing prices in the range of 57,000 - 58,000 VND/kg.

The price of live pigs in the Southern region today is around 56,000 - 58,000 VND/kg.

* According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in the first 7 months of 2023, Vietnam's livestock product exports are estimated at 276 million USD, up 27.4% over the same period last year. Of which, meat, meat by-products, and edible by-products after slaughtering reached 80 million USD, up 36.5%.

Vietnam has the fifth largest pig herd in the world (about 25 million heads, equivalent to 3.1 million tons). In the first half of the year, our country exported about 19,000 tons of pork (mainly frozen suckling pigs), worth over 18.4 million USD. As for live pigs, it was only about 6,800 heads.

Mr. Nguyen Kim Doan, Vice President of Dong Nai Livestock Association, said that Vietnam's livestock farming costs are quite high because the supply chains depend heavily on external sources.

Our country's sources of animal feed, veterinary medicine, and breeding animals are basically imported and the supply is dominated by foreign direct investment (FDI) enterprises, so meat products currently cannot compete with other countries.

"Regarding pig farming, the cost in Vietnam is about 50,000 VND/kg. For large farms that are self-sufficient in breeding, the cost is about 45,000 - 48,000 VND/kg.

However, in European countries, this figure is only about 35,000 VND/kg. In America (USA, Brazil), the price is less than 25,000 VND/kg. Compared to countries like Thailand and China, the cost of pork production in Vietnam is very different," said Mr. Nguyen Kim Doan.
