Many vegetable growing areas in the province are being severely affected by high tides and prolonged heavy rains, causing large areas to be flooded, pests to arise, and supplies to decrease sharply. Since the beginning of November, the price of green vegetables in the fields and wholesale markets has increased rapidly, with some types doubling compared to before, causing both traders and consumers to sigh.

The prices of many types of vegetables and fruits sold at the market have increased by 5,000-15,000 VND/kg.
Prices of many types of vegetables and fruits sold at the market increased from 5,000 to 15,000 VND/kg.

At Phuoc Hau Safe Vegetable Production and Consumption Cooperative, Mr. Dang Thanh Hung - Deputy Director of the Cooperative said: "It has been many years since we have seen such a high tide. Heavy rain combined with high tides caused about 90% of the cooperative's vegetable area to be flooded. Farmers were caught off guard, many fields could not be harvested in time, and yields decreased significantly."

According to Mr. Hung, the price of vegetables in the field increased 3-4 times compared to last month. Specifically, sweet cabbage is 20,000-25,000 VND/kg, green mustard and lettuce are also about 30,000 VND/kg. The group of spices such as basil, perilla, coriander... increased more sharply, many types increased 5-6 times.

At Ngãi Tứ wholesale market (Ngải Tứ commune), the wholesale prices of many vegetables have also increased by 5,000-10,000 VND/kg compared to last month. The current recorded prices include: green beans, cucumbers, squash, bitter melon, okra, fluctuating around 15,000-17,000 VND/kg. Many traders said that the supply is low and the quality is uneven due to continuous rain, making transportation and preservation difficult.

At Vinh Long , Tan Hanh, and Phuoc Hau markets, vegetable and fruit prices have increased significantly since the beginning of this week. Leafy vegetables and spices have nearly doubled compared to last month. Currently, sweet cabbage is around 20,000 VND/kg; green mustard is 18,000-20,000 VND/kg; bitter melon is 20,000-25,000 VND/kg; regular tomatoes are 25,000 VND/kg; green onions are 25,000-28,000 VND/kg; watercress is 45,000 VND/kg... Notably, leafy vegetables and spices are still at the highest price in the market and are almost "out of stock".

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ton, a trader at Vinh Long market (Long Chau ward), said: "From the beginning of the week until now, vegetable prices have increased every day. Heavy rain and high tides have caused a sharp decrease in the amount of vegetables coming to the market."

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, to date, high tides have flooded over 227 hectares of crops. Vegetables have been directly damaged in terms of area and yield; some areas may have to be replanted.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Dung - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, to limit damage, after rain, floods and high tides, vegetable farmers need to apply some measures to restore production. Specifically, clean the fields, remove rotten and wilted plants; if possible, cover the base of the plant with powdered soil or clean substrate to help it grow new roots.

For cucurbit plants, limit root impact, only prune damaged leaves and treat fungal diseases. In addition, dilute phosphate fertilizer or biological products to water the roots to help restore the root system, stimulate new roots. Supplement nutrients through leaves with foliar fertilizers, trace elements or growth stimulants according to instructions. Spray or water the roots with biological products to prevent root rot and bacterial wilt. When the soil is dry, proceed to cultivate and water with diluted fertilizer, gradually increasing the concentration according to the plant's recovery.

It is necessary to visit fields and gardens regularly, paying special attention to pests on vegetables to prevent and control them promptly and effectively. When using drugs, it is necessary to follow the "4 rights" principle and the quarantine period, and use drugs for vegetables.
