Fresh chili price remains at 150,000 VND/kg

These days, many vegetable growing areas in Da Nang have just begun to enter the post-flood production recovery phase, causing a shortage of vegetable supply.

At Hoa Khanh market, Bac My An market... vegetable prices remain high compared to the time before the flood. Water spinach, mustard greens, and amaranth are currently priced at around 15,000 - 20,000 VND/bunch. Basil and cinnamon are also priced from 100,000 VND/kg or more, doubling or even tripling compared to before the flood. Fresh chili is especially priced at around 150,000 VND/kg.

Ms. Mai Thi Huong (a trader at Hoa Khanh market) said that the prices of some vegetables such as lettuce, Vietnamese coriander, and fish mint have decreased slightly but have not yet returned to their old levels because the supply is recovering slowly. As for vegetables that require a longer growing time such as squash, bitter melon, amaranth, tomatoes, etc., the prices are expected to remain high in the coming time.

"Like other years, after floods or bad weather, vegetable supplies are scarce, and vegetable prices increase. However, this year, floods have lasted for a long time, so vegetable prices have also increased for a long time," said Ms. Huong.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Linh (Hoa Khanh Ward, Da Nang City) shared: "Vegetables are expensive, but now chili is even more expensive than meat. Once, I bought fresh chili for 2,000 VND, and the seller gave me 2-3, which surprised me. Before, when buying vegetables, the seller often added a handful of chili, but now when going to the market, I have to buy 5,000 - 10,000 VND to have enough for my family."

High prices of seedlings

La Huong vegetable village located on Cam Le river (Da Nang city) is one of the large vegetable growing areas of Da Nang city with an area of nearly 10 hectares.

According to records, many farmers here are urgently replanting vegetables after the flood. However, the scarcity of seedlings and high prices have made people anxiously "bet" everything on the Tet crop.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa (farmer of La Huong vegetable village) said that after the recent flood, her family's entire vegetable area was completely damaged and now she has to replant from the beginning.

"The recent flood damaged a lot of fertilizers, pumps, squash trellises, and flooded plows. The estimated damage is up to tens of millions of dong. It's a pity to leave the land bare now, but growing vegetables is like gambling because we don't know what the weather will be like in the future, and the price of seedlings is sky-high," Ms. Hoa shared.

Nearby, Ms. Mai Thi Tien shared: "Morning spinach is about 80,000 VND/kg, spinach and green onions have also increased in price, the cost of reproduction is too high. No one has vegetables and fruits like tomatoes and chili to sell."

According to farmers, many types of vegetable seeds are currently expensive. Finding and purchasing these vegetables and seeds is also difficult because many other localities have also suffered heavy damage after the floods.

Mr. Tran Van Hoang - Chairman of La Huong Safe Vegetable Cooperative - said that the recent floods have severely damaged many vegetable areas of farmers, with preliminary losses of more than 100 million VND. The onion area alone was completely damaged, and the trellises and greenhouses collapsed. These days, people are taking advantage of the opportunity to restore the land in time for planting for Tet.

According to Mr. Hoang, there are still vegetable varieties on the market but the prices are quite high, farmers, despite difficulties, still have to buy them to maintain production. In the coming time, the cooperative will ensure the consumption source.
