Cambodian durian "upgraded": From domestic to export to China

The importance of durian in Cambodia’s agriculture is increasingly being reinforced, especially after the country became the ninth country in ASEAN to be allowed to directly export this fruit to the Chinese market. This is a significant step forward, following other key agricultural products of Cambodia such as rice, bananas, mangoes, longans and pepper.

Currently, Cambodia has about 5,289 hectares of durian cultivation area, with an estimated annual output of 36,600 to 37,000 tons. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), there are nine provinces with high potential for durian cultivation, including Kampot, Kampong Cham, Tbong Khmum, Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri, Battambang, Pursat, Koh Kong and Kampong Thom. Among these, Tbong Khmum stands out with its large planned area for durian harvesting and export.

The opening of the Chinese market will bring great benefits to Cambodian farmers. Heng Pisith, Director of the Tbong Khmum Provincial Department of Agriculture, emphasized that this initiative will help farmers shift from supplying only the domestic market or exporting to Thailand to the Chinese market, where prices are stable and product quality is guaranteed according to professional packaging standards.
