From a price of millions of VND per fruit, durian is now only 40,000-60,000 VND/kg for whole fruit and 95,000-200,000 VND/kg for Ri6 durian pulp, the lowest price since 2022.
Ms. Dao Thi Tuyet Dung (Bach Mai ward, Hanoi ) shared that her family can now comfortably buy durian to eat every week. Recently, she ordered 2kg of Ri6 durian rice at 150,000 VND/kg to give to her grandparents. The price is much cheaper than before, when Ri6 durian rice used to cost up to 850,000 VND/kg, so I no longer have to sadly 'look at the durian', she said.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh, a durian seller in Yen Hoa (Hanoi), from 2022 to the end of 2024, durian prices will always be high due to the sharp increase in export demand to China.
At times, the price of whole fruit was up to 270,000 VND/kg, durian rice fluctuated from 550,000-850,000 VND/kg, making this fruit a "luxury food".
However, since the beginning of 2025, durian exports to China have encountered difficulties, leading to abundant supply and sharp price drops.
Currently, Ms. Thanh sells Ri6 durian grade 1 for only 55,000 VND/kg (whole fruit) and 200,000 VND/kg (durian pulp), with a commitment to return if the quality is not guaranteed.
Similarly, Ms. Vu Thi Mai, a fruit seller in Giang Vo, said that the price of Monthong durian is currently only 140,000-170,000 VND/kg, a sharp decrease compared to 350,000-400,000 VND/kg last year.
In Hanoi, durian is currently sold in stores, online markets and even piled up on the sidewalk. The price of whole Ri6 durian is commonly from 40,000-60,000 VND/kg, Ri6 durian pulp is from 95,000-200,000 VND/kg, while whole Monthong durian ranges from 50,000-80,000 VND/kg, durian pulp is from 140,000-300,000 VND/kg. Sources said that the current retail price is only 1/3 compared to the peak period in 2024.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , durian output in 2025 is estimated to reach 1.5 million tons, with the peak season from April to September.
However, exports to China fell sharply, reaching only 130 million USD in the first 4 months of the year, compared to 500 million USD in the same period in 2024.
Mr. Nguyen Van Muoi, Deputy General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, explained that many batches of durian did not meet export standards because the rainy season came early, causing the fruit to be hard and of poor quality.
Grade A goods only account for a small portion, while grade C, D or discarded goods must be sold at low prices, even below cost.
To take advantage of the abundant supply, some supermarkets in Hanoi have organized durian buffets with tickets priced at VND199,000/person for 1 hour, equivalent to the price of grade A durian at about VND60,000/kg. Although this form of promotion brings great benefits to consumers, gardeners still face challenges when the selling price does not meet expectations.
With the upcoming peak harvest in the Central Highlands, sources predict that durian prices may continue to fall, bringing the opportunity to enjoy the 'king of fruits' at a more affordable price for people.
