These days, Ms. NT (owner of a durian warehouse in Dong Thap province) said that although durian has entered the off-season, China has continuously increased its import output, causing a shortage and pushing up prices. However, the purchasing warehouse only makes a profit of a few thousand dong per kilogram of durian.
High prices but low profits
In fact, according to a survey, at the Hai Lien durian purchasing warehouse in Dong Thap province, the price of Ri6 durian type A is currently at 75,000-76,000 VND/kg, type B fluctuates at 60,000-61,000 VND/kg, an increase of about 30% compared to the end of October.
Meanwhile, the price of Monthong durian grade A, which fell to VND70,000/kg in September and October due to inspection procedures, has recovered to VND100,000-105,000/kg.
Even on December 5, grade A Monthong durians were sold by farms in Mekong Delta buy at a sharp increase in price, fluctuating between 118,000-120,000 VND/kg.
For Monthong type B, warehouses purchased at prices ranging from 80,000-85,000 VND/kg, a slight decrease of 10,000-15,000 VND/kg compared to December 5.
Mr. Van Khiem, owner of a durian garden in Dong Thap province, said that currently, the price of Ri6 type A durian purchased at the garden is 71,000 VND/kg, type B 67,000 VND/kg. Meanwhile, the price of Monthong durian is slightly higher than Ri6, with type A durian priced at 120,000 VND/kg, and type B durian priced at 100,000 VND/kg.
Share with Knowledge - Znews , Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VinaFruit), said that by the end of October, the Central Highlands durian season had ended, so from November onwards, other regions such as the Mekong Delta began to grow off-season durian. However, the output of goods meeting export standards was very low, which pushed up prices in the first days of December.
Notably, Mr. Khiem expressed that with the price of off-season durians currently high, many gardeners still make a profit, but not much. In addition, the erratic weather has caused some durians to easily become waterlogged, waterlogged, and have broken thorns, forcing some gardeners to accept selling this type of fruit for about 35,000 VND/kg.
In addition to fruit quality, the increasing cost of fertilizer has gardeners worried about their plans to grow off-season durian next year, including Mr. Khiem's family.
Although the purchase price at the garden and warehouse has increased, there are still places on the market that sell durian at a lower price, only 35,000-40,000 VND/kg. However, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen emphasized that these are "floating goods", the proportion of small fruits that do not meet export standards. Therefore, buyers need to consider carefully and only buy durian from reputable suppliers.
Vietnamese durian "one of a kind"
According to data from Vietnam Customs, durian export turnover continues to accelerate, reaching more than 3.3 billion USD In the past 10 months, the export turnover of the "king of fruits" increased by 10.4% compared to the same period last year. This is the highest level ever, making the "king of fruits" the agricultural product group with the largest contribution to the export turnover of the whole industry.
In October alone, our country's durian exports earned more than 572 million USD , an increase of nearly 170% over the same period in 2024. Currently, China is still Vietnam's largest durian purchasing market, accounting for more than 94% of the total turnover in 10 months, equivalent to more than 3.1 billion USD .

VinaFruit representative commented that from September to October, Vietnamese durian was "alone in the market" because Thailand had finished its main crop and was severely affected by floods. Therefore, Vietnam's durian export turnover increased to a record high.
"It is expected that durian exports in November and December will contribute more 700 million USD , bringing this year's turnover to a milestone 4 billion USD , exceeding the limit 3.2 billion USD of 2024," Mr. Nguyen added.
Besides the Chinese market, durian exports to other major regions also recorded strong growth in the past 10 months. Specifically, Hong Kong (China) increased by nearly 89%, up more than 45 million USD and continue to serve as important transit hubs. In addition, Japan and Canada maintained double-digit growth, at 18% and 36%, respectively.
On the contrary, durian exports to Thailand decreased by 77%, more than 34 million USD , while South Korea decreased by 35% and Cambodia decreased by 58% compared to the same period last year.
Previously, at the end of November, the fruit and vegetable industry and jackfruit farmers also received good news when Minister of Agriculture and Environment Tran Duc Thang and Deputy Director General of the General Administration of Customs of China signed the Protocol on exporting fresh jackfruit.
Regarding the above information, Mr. Nguyen said that previously, fresh jackfruit was officially exported to the Chinese market. The signing of the Protocol by both sides helps to facilitate customs clearance and plant quarantine, thereby shortening transportation time.
However, fresh jackfruit products face many problems in competing with other countries, including domestic products from China. "Therefore, this fresh jackfruit export protocol contributes to development, but does not necessarily create a shock for the fruit and vegetable industry like the durian protocol," he added.
According to a representative of VinaFruit, before Vietnam and China officially signed the Protocol on exporting fresh and frozen durian, businesses were "blocked" from officially exporting this fruit to the billion-people country. Therefore, the protocol has promoted massive durian exports, helping the entire fruit and vegetable industry achieve positive results over the past many years.
