According to statistics at the Department of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, Ho Chi Minh City Mental Hospital, the number of children coming for examination and treatment of mental illnesses and depression has increased compared to previous years.
The number of students with mental health problems in schools is also increasing, however, the number of students being taken to specialized psychiatric hospitals for examination and treatment is still very modest compared to the actual number of students with mental health problems in hospitals.
Recently, a supervisor at Thu Duc High School promptly discovered and stopped a female student from using a sharp object to cause bleeding on her hand in the restroom. This is not a rare case among students today. Especially at the age of 10-16, students experience major changes in their psychology and physiology, are affected by many relationships with family, school, friends and society, and are very susceptible to depression.
Currently, in schools, the situation of students having psychological and mental health problems is not uncommon. For example, at Bui Thi Xuan High School, there are about 15 students being supported by the school with separate programs, coordinated between families and the school, the principal and the teachers directly involved.
The schools' wish is to soon have a job position of "School Psychology Consultant", with proper training, to support students.
According to medical experts, many families are still not aware of the importance of mental health issues in students. Therefore, they often bring their children to see a doctor for treatment very late, leaving serious consequences that are difficult to treat in a short time.
Ho Chi Minh City has repeatedly requested ministries to soon have official job positions for school counselors in schools to provide timely support and mental health care for students.
