Brain fog is said to be one of the symptoms of long-term Covid-19
According to a report in the journal Nature Neuroscience , a team of experts from Trinity College Dublin (Ireland) believes that brain fog symptoms may come from a leaky blood-brain barrier.
The blood-brain barrier acts as a control for what types of substances can enter and leave the brain. "It's a mechanism that regulates the balance of substances in the blood versus the brain," said Professor Matthew Campbell, a co-author of the report from Trinity College Dublin.
“If there is an imbalance in the blood-brain barrier, it can lead to changes in neurological function, and if this happens in the areas of the brain responsible for condensing and storing memories, it can cause major damage,” Professor Campbell warned.
To reach their conclusions, Campbell and his colleagues analyzed serum and plasma samples from 76 patients hospitalized for Covid-19 treatment in March or April 2020, as well as 25 people before the pandemic hit.
Professor Campbell added it was likely that people with a tight blood-brain barrier would be better protected against brain fog if they had long-haul Covid-19.
A follow-up report in a small group of patients found that people with long-term Covid-19 and brain fog also had increased levels of a protein linked to the risk of blood clots.
The actual number of Covid-19 cases could be up to 19 times higher?
