Pressure from damage caused by natural disasters
The price decline comes as many pepper growing areas are facing difficulties due to the impact of storms and floods. According to reports, Gia Lai province has had 11,861 hectares of crops flooded and felled after storm No. 13 and prolonged floods. Of these, nearly 49 hectares of perennial crops such as pepper, coffee, bananas and passion fruit were damaged. The estimated agricultural damage in the province is up to hundreds of billions of VND.
Negative weather impacts are raising concerns about the output of the new harvest, expected to begin right after the Lunar New Year, especially in key growing regions of the Central Highlands and the Southeast.
World pepper market developments
According to updates from the International Pepper Community (IPC), pepper export prices in the world market have had mixed developments but no major fluctuations have been recorded. Specifically:
- In Indonesia: Lampung black pepper price decreased by 0.06% to 7,099 USD/ton, Muntok white pepper also decreased correspondingly to 9,732 USD/ton due to abundant supply and weak demand.
- In Malaysia: Prices remained stable with ASTA black pepper at USD 9,200/ton and ASTA white pepper at USD 12,300/ton.
- In Brazil: Prices remained unchanged at $6,100/ton.
- Vietnam's pepper export prices: No new adjustments. Black pepper 500g/l and 550g/l are at 6,400 USD/ton and 6,600 USD/ton respectively. White pepper is stable at 9,050 USD/ton.
A report from the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) forecasts that global pepper output in 2025 may decrease slightly due to adverse weather conditions. However, the supply chain is assessed to still be sufficient to meet demand. World output may recover to about 533,000 tons in 2026 if weather conditions are favorable.
