With the goal of forming a biosafety melon production area, intensive farming to increase productivity and quality associated with converting crop structure on rice and seedling land towards increasing value, recently, Gia Vien District Agricultural Service Center has built a production model "Application of technical advances in biosafety melon production in Gia Tien commune".
The model was implemented with 3 types of melons: muskmelon, honeydew melon, and cucumber with 7 households participating. During the implementation process, households were trained in planting techniques, care, and pest control for melons. The results of yield assessment for melons in the first crop reached over 200 quintals/ha, in the second crop reached over 196 quintals/ha; for melons in the first crop reached over 100 quintals/ha, in the second crop reached over 122 quintals/ha; cucumbers reached over 200 quintals/ha. After 3 production seasons, the profit after deducting costs reached over 222 million VND/ha/year (8 million VND/sao), 18 times higher than rice cultivation.
In addition to economic efficiency, the model also helps people apply new science and technology to growing melons and better control pests and diseases. In particular, through the model, farmers have gained more experience in growing and caring for melons for high quality. From there, continue to develop and replicate the model in the future to increase income and improve the quality of life.
