World oil prices rise after many sessions of deep decline
At the end of the trading session on December 1, world crude oil prices increased. Brent oil prices increased by 0.79 USD/barrel (equivalent to 1.27%), to 63.17 USD/barrel. WTI oil prices increased by 0.77 USD/barrel (equivalent to 1.32%), to 59.32 USD/barrel.
The market is feeling uneasy about the possibility of a reduction in Russian crude supplies, said John Kilduff, partner at Again Capital LLC. Traders are closely watching the Russia-Ukraine deal. Brent and WTI have fallen for four straight months, marking their longest losing streak since 2023, on concerns that global supplies will continue to rise.
OPEC+ has agreed to keep the group's crude oil production level unchanged until December 2026 and adopt a mechanism to determine members' maximum oil production capacity.
The latest decision marks a slowdown in OPEC+ efforts to regain market share amid growing uncertainty in the global oil market. Jorge Leon, head of geopolitical analysis at Rystad Energy, said the OPEC+ message was clear: Stabilize the market rather than regain market share at a time when the market outlook is rapidly deteriorating.
LSEG expert Anh Pham said the market is reacting positively to this news. In recent times, the main story has been the risk of oversupply, so the decision by OPEC+ to maintain production has brought some reassurance and stability to the market in the coming months.
Geopolitical tensions have also added to the uncertainty in energy markets. On November 29, US President Donald Trump said that the airspace over and around Venezuela should be considered closed. Venezuela is one of the region’s major oil producers.
