From June 3 to 4, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid an official visit to Vietnam, opening a new phase in bilateral relations. The visit took place in the context of Vietnam and Australia celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations (February 26, 1973 - February 26, 2023) and the 5th anniversary of the Strategic Partnership (March 15, 2018 - March 15, 2023).
Important partners
According to Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia Nguyen Tat Thanh, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's visit to Vietnam is his second official visit to a Southeast Asian country since taking office and the third official visit by an Australian Prime Minister to Vietnam.
Ambassador Nguyen Tat Thanh said that in the context of the two countries proactively promoting the substantive bilateral relationship, the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Albanese is of great significance, creating the foundation for a closer partnership between the two countries in the new period both bilaterally and multilaterally.
According to The National Tribune, Australia, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will meet with senior leaders of Vietnam. The leaders of the two countries will discuss measures to promote trade, investment, education links and expand cooperation on climate, energy and the environment. The newspaper affirmed: "Vietnam is an increasingly important economic and strategic partner for Australia in Southeast Asia and is a focus of the current Australian Government's foreign policy."

“Australia is committed to broadening and deepening our relationships with our partners in Southeast Asia to address common challenges. My first official visit to Vietnam is an opportunity to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations and to agree on new economic, trade and other cooperation programs to deliver a stronger relationship in the future,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
3 main pillars
Dr. Nguyen Hong Hai, researcher at the Center for Policy Futures, University of Queensland (Australia), commented: Vietnam and Australia can upgrade their bilateral relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, which will be a testament to the high political trust that the two countries have worked hard to cultivate, not only deepening the existing pillars of cooperation but also expanding into new areas of cooperation such as climate change response, digital transformation, green economy and green energy.
Dr. Nguyen Hong Hai said that since the two countries established a strategic partnership five years ago, the results of cooperation between the two countries on three main pillars - economy, trade and investment; education and training; defense and security - have been extremely impressive.
Australia is currently Vietnam's 7th largest trading partner and Vietnam is Australia's 10th largest trading partner. By the end of 2022, the total value of two-way trade turnover will reach approximately 16 billion USD. Australia is currently one of the foreign education markets that attracts the most Vietnamese students.
As of December 2022, there were more than 22,000 Vietnamese students studying at various educational institutions in Australia, accounting for 4% of the international student population, making Vietnam one of the top 5 countries with the largest number of students studying in Australia. The two sides have also signed many documents, established cooperation mechanisms and held many meetings at different levels, focusing on the fields of humanitarian aid and disaster relief.
