Installing rooftop solar power in the form of self-production and self-consumption brings direct benefits to people and businesses by reducing monthly electricity bills, thereby ensuring the safety of the national power system. In addition, businesses also enhance their value through the image of a green, environmentally friendly business.
Need to exploit solar energy effectively
The World Bank (WB) assessed that the solar radiation potential in Vietnam is very large with radiation intensity ranging from 897 to 2108 kWh/m 2 /year, equivalent to 2.46 and 5.77 kWh/m 2 /day. The technical potential of rooftop solar power (RTP) is also calculated to reach more than 140,000MW, with existing and planned industrial parks alone having an estimated technical potential of nearly 20,000MW (if each industrial park is allowed to install 50MWp).
In the context of Vietnam becoming a net importer of energy since 2015 and the current energy transition in the world, energy expert Ha Dang Son, Director of the Center for Energy Research and Green Growth, also affirmed: After looking back at the advantages as well as considering the challenges and difficulties for development, renewable energy In our country, recently, rooftop solar power has shown great superiority compared to other types.
"This model can use existing roofs of industrial parks, houses or offices with many scales from a few kWp to a few MWp. The cost of investing in rooftop solar power has now decreased, while the current trend is that many households and industrial parks have also installed this system, contributing to reducing pressure on the national power system, especially during the hot season," energy expert Ha Dang Son added.
According to statistics from Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), the electricity output purchased by EVN from rooftop solar power systems in 2023 reached more than 11 billion kWh, accounting for 3.97% of the total electricity output produced and imported by the entire system. This data was recorded as of December 31, 2023, with 103,509 rooftop solar power systems and a capacity of nearly 9.6 million kWp signed with EVN for power purchase contracts. In 2024, EVN mobilized about 12 billion kWh of electricity from rooftop solar power systems.
Contribute to reducing electricity bills
After researching and receiving guidance from electricity officials, in 2024, with a cost of more than 200 million VND, Ms. Tran Thu Thuy's family in Bac Giang ward, Bac Ninh province, installed a rooftop solar power system with a capacity of 18kWp, accompanied by a storage unit (BESS) with a capacity of 16.1kWh.
When asked about the model, Ms. Thuy excitedly shared: After researching and seeing that the installation cost had also decreased compared to before, the family decided to install the system. The family has many children, so the air conditioner is used almost 24/24 hours. Thanks to this model, instead of having to pay nearly 5 million for electricity, now the cost of her family has decreased to only 600,000-800,000 VND/month. This is also the cost for grid electricity used between 3-6 am when there is no sun and the energy storage system is used up.
Mr. Nguyen Quoc Dung, Head of EVN Business Department, also emphasized the specific benefits for households using electricity, when the electricity consumption level is from 401kWh or more, the electricity price is more than 3,000 VND/kWh. Thus, when using rooftop solar power, reduce electricity costs at the highest price and that is a practical benefit to the people.
Similarly, Crystal Martin Company Limited (Vietnam) in Van Trung Industrial Park has deployed a rooftop solar power system with a capacity of 2,675kWp, which not only contributes to reducing electricity costs but also meets "green" standards in exporting goods.
Crystal Martin Vietnam General Director Oun Kaowsiri shared: Installing a rooftop solar power system is one of the very important solutions that Crystal Martin has deployed since 2019. Currently, the enterprise has completed phase 3, helping to save about 3 million kWh per year.
It is expected that in the next 3-4 years, the company will complete the remaining 2 phases to bring the total electricity output to 6 million kWh/year, saving about 40% of the total electricity consumption of the entire factory. This system will help the company reduce input costs as well as achieve the goal of Crystal Group and Crystal Martin to reduce CO2 emissions by 35%. by 2030.
It can be seen that, in the context of extreme weather and increasing demand for electricity, on-site renewable energy sources will help reduce pressure on the national power system, improve stability and proactiveness in electricity use, and save long-term costs for users.
Furthermore, the development of green energy also contributes to promoting economic transformation towards sustainability, improving the competitiveness of export goods, and meeting strict standards in the international market.
