(NADS) - Carol Surface, who joined Apple from Medtronic in early 2023 as Chief People Officer, has announced her departure from the company after less than two years with the company. The sudden departure surprised many, given the rare short tenure for a senior executive at Apple.
Surface’s decision was announced to Apple employees on October 16, according to an insider. She previously oversaw Apple’s 160,000-person global workforce and ensured the company’s human resources, engagement, and diversity policies. Prior to joining Apple, she held a similar role at medical technology company Medtronic.
Surface reported directly to CEO Tim Cook for this decision. With her departure, Deirdre O'Brien, Surface's predecessor, will take over the position of managing Apple's human resources and retail division.
The move comes at a time when Apple is facing a number of leadership changes. Apple CFO Luca Maestri has announced his resignation and will leave the company at the end of the year. Longtime engineering director Dan Riccio is also retiring at the end of October, along with shopping chief Dan Rosckes and App Store head Matt Fischer.
Carol Surface’s departure is notable, especially since Apple rarely sees rapid turnover at the top. The company has seen similar but rare cases in the past, such as a VP of communications who lasted just a few months, or John Browett, the head of retail, who lasted less than a year more than a decade ago.
The current situation shows that Apple is entering a period of major transformation in its senior leadership team, promising many more important changes in the future.
