Monitoring the effectiveness of developing Son La medicinal herb commodity area

On November 27, the GREAT Project Management Board and the GREAT Project Management Consulting Office organized a monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness and expansion potential of the Son La Medicinal Herbs Area Development Sub-project under the GREAT 2 Project in the two communes of To Mua and Song Khua.

GREAT Project survey team exchanged information with VietRAP Son La Company and Van Ho Herbal Agricultural Cooperative.

In 2025, the sub-project aims to develop 37.7 hectares of 7 medicinal herbs: 2 hectares of Panax notoginseng, 2 hectares of Salvia miltiorrhiza, 5 hectares of Sand ginseng, 3.5 hectares of Angelica sinensis, 4.2 hectares of Motherwort, 20 hectares of Purple cardamom and 1 hectare of Achyranthes bidentata. Since the beginning of the year, 2 hectares of Panax notoginseng, 1 hectare of Achyranthes bidentata, 3.5 hectares of Angelwort, 4.2 hectares of Motherwort and 20 hectares of Purple cardamom have been planted. At the end of the year, it is expected to continue planting 2 hectares of Red ginseng and 5 hectares of Sand ginseng. For Motherwort, a short-term medicinal herb, enterprises and cooperatives have purchased the entire output on an area of ​​4.2 hectares, with a yield of 3.4-4 tons of dried medicinal herbs/hectare, with an average price of 17,000 VND/kg of dried herbs.

The working group surveyed the medicinal plant growing areas of VietRAP Son La Company, Van Ho Herbal Agricultural Cooperative and member households participating in the project. The models of growing angelica, motherwort, purple cardamom, and panax notoginseng... are applied by the people with production processes according to the value chain, complying with quality standards, shifting from traditional farming methods to growing medicinal plants with high economic value according to GACP-WHO standards.

The GREAT Project Management Board highly appreciated the efforts of VietRAP Son La Company, Van Ho Herbal Agricultural Cooperative and households in implementing the sub-project. At the same time, it requested the implementing unit to continue improving the cooperative's management capacity, strengthen technical guidance for people, focus on quality control according to GACP-WHO and promote market linkages. GREAT will accompany and support the model to develop a sustainable medicinal value chain, creating more job opportunities, especially for ethnic minority women.
