The road looks like… a rocky beach.
Even in mid-May, Ngu Chi Son commune is frequently shrouded in fog, making the atmosphere even more gloomy. Leading us along the inter-communal road from Ban Khoang to Phin Ngan (from Provincial Road 155 to the May Ho Hydropower Plant area and the villages of Lu Khau, Sin Chai, Yen Son, Kim Ngan, Xa Chai, and Can Ho Chai), Mr. Chao Lao Ta (from Sin Chai village) couldn't hide his sorrow as he looked towards the steep slope. The once-concrete road surface is now just a patch of broken pieces mixed with loose rocks.

According to Mr. Ta, a few years ago, the villagers were overjoyed when the inter-village road was paved, making travel and trade easier. However, that joy didn't last long; floods and other factors caused the road to deteriorate severely. Mr. Ta said: "The current road is very bad, making travel difficult and dangerous. I hope the government will soon invest in upgrading the road so that people can travel more easily and develop their economy ."
In reality, the stretch of road, less than 10km long, took us over 30 minutes of "struggling" on motorbikes to get through. Deep potholes and uneven surfaces were everywhere, with some sections having steep slopes and slippery, rocky surfaces that made even experienced drivers hesitant.
Not only Mr. Ta, but hundreds of households in this area are living in insecurity every time they have to travel along this road, especially on rainy days when the road is slippery. Mr. Chao Lao Lo (Can Ho Chai village) said: "I have to take my children to and from school 3-4 times a week on this road. The road is bad and poses many dangers. We hope for investment soon to make travel safer."

Concerns about transportation infrastructure are becoming even more urgent for the people of Ngu Chi Son as the rainy season approaches. With its terrain featuring a sheer cliff on one side and a deep ravine on the other, the damaged road surface poses a constant risk of accidents.
Solutions for upgrading and repairing are needed soon.
Discussing the deteriorating condition of the Ban Khoang - Phin Ngan inter-communal road, Mr. Hoang Ngoc Dinh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ngu Chi Son commune, acknowledged that this is a difficult problem that the local government has been concerned about for a long time. According to Mr. Dinh, this road project was implemented in 2017 under the mechanism of "the State and the People working together." At that time, the people were very supportive, with many households voluntarily donating land to widen the road. However, the construction process encountered many obstacles leading to prolonged delays, focusing on issues related to compensation policies, inflation, and material shortages.

The inter-communal road from Ban Khoang to Phin Ngan is considered the "lifeline" of local trade. However, every day hundreds of students still have to endure the arduous journeys to school, while farmers' agricultural products are subjected to price manipulation because traders are hesitant to use the poor road conditions. The journey out of poverty for hundreds of households in Ngu Chi Son commune will remain very difficult if this transportation bottleneck is not resolved. Hopefully, the requests of the people and the commune government will soon receive answers from relevant levels and sectors, especially as the 2026 rainy season is approaching.
