After a period of stagnation, the price of green pomelo has recovered significantly. Mr. Tran Van Au, from Binh Thanh neighborhood, My Phong commune, Dong Thap province, said that his family recently sold nearly 1 ton of green pomelo at 30,000 VND/kg, an increase of about 5,000 VND/kg compared to last month. With a cultivated area of 3,000 m², this price helps his family make a good profit, offsetting the costs of caring for the trees throughout the year.
According to Mr. Au, this year, due to the leap year, many areas of early-ripening pomelos had to be harvested about a month before Tet (Lunar New Year). By the time Tet approached, the supply to the market was no longer as abundant as in previous years, while the demand for pomelos for display and gifts increased significantly. Therefore, the supply-demand imbalance contributed to the price of pomelos rising again.
In the Dong Thap Muoi region, pineapple prices have also increased significantly in the days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year). Mr. Bui Huu Thien, from Hung Thanh commune, Dong Thap province, said that his family cultivates 20 hectares of pineapples and recently sold about 100 tons for the Tet market at 8,200 VND/kg, earning nearly 800 million VND. After deducting expenses, farmers achieved a profit of about 2,500 - 3,000 VND/kg.
Notably, pineapple prices remained stable at high levels throughout 2025 and the first few months of 2026, providing reassurance to growers. The favorable market conditions, especially during the peak Tet holiday season, encouraged farmers to invest in replanting and improving product quality for both the domestic market and export.
Not only pomelos and pineapples, but also Hoa Loc mangoes, one of the local specialties, are in high demand. Mr. Nguyen Van Muoi Ba, from Hoa hamlet, An Huu commune, said that traders are buying grade 1 mangoes at 120,000 - 140,000 VND/kg, an increase of 20,000 - 30,000 VND/kg compared to the period before Tet.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thuc, Director of Hoa Loc Cooperative, noted that this year's mango production for Tet (Lunar New Year) has decreased due to a low fruit setting rate. The entire commune has approximately 200 hectares of Hoa Loc mangoes; of which, about 120 hectares are expected to bear fruit for the 2026 Lunar New Year. However, the fruit setting rate is only 30-40%, much lower than in previous years, leading to limited supply.
The simultaneous increase in prices of many types of fruit amidst favorable market conditions is seen as a positive sign for the fruit industry in Dong Thap province. This also provides a basis for producers to strengthen links with cooperatives and businesses, aiming for sustainable value chain production.
According to Mr. Le Ha Luan, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap province, after the administrative boundary consolidation, the province has more favorable conditions to reorganize large-scale production, forming specialized farming areas linked to processing and consumption, especially in the field of fruit trees. Currently, the entire province has over 134,000 hectares of fruit trees, with a production of about 2.5 million tons, accounting for more than 34% of the total fruit tree area in the Mekong Delta region.
Following the merger, Dong Thap's agricultural advantages continued to expand. While previously the province was famous for Cao Lanh mangoes, Lai Vung mandarins, and Chau Thanh longan, its fruit crop structure has become even more diverse with durian, jackfruit, rambutan, Hoa Loc mangoes, and more. This abundance creates a diverse "fruit map," increasing its ability to meet both domestic and export market demands.
Expanding the area and forming concentrated raw material zones contributes to enhancing production linkage capacity, creating conditions for cooperatives and businesses to invest in processing, brand building, and traceability—mandatory requirements when participating in international markets.
Currently, many types of fruit from the province are being officially exported to demanding markets such as the US, EU, Japan, and China. The province is proposing that the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection support the development of soil maps for key fruit-growing areas serving export purposes, as a basis for planning and sustainable development.
Alongside expanding the cultivated area, Dong Thap focuses on safe and organic production, applying high technology and digital transformation in managing planting area codes and traceability. To date, the entire province has been granted 1,846 planting area codes covering an area of 185,469 hectares; of which, 1,500 planting areas serve exports (3,449 codes), covering nearly 99,878 hectares, along with 462 packaging facility codes.
Therefore, the increase in agricultural product prices during the Lunar New Year season is not only significant due to the timing but also reflects the positive transformation of the fruit industry in Dong Thap. As production gradually aligns with the market, focusing on quality and traceability, Dong Thap's agricultural products are steadily asserting their position, creating a foundation for farmers to confidently enter the new season with high expectations.
