Second-hand and recycled products are gradually becoming a popular choice for many young people.
Second-hand items are used products such as clothing, shoes, bags, or fashion accessories that are resold for continued use. Previously, many people associated second-hand items with saving money or for low-income earners. However, in recent years, this trend has become increasingly popular among young people. At many second-hand stores, it's not uncommon to see young people carefully selecting each used shirt, pair of pants, or accessory. Some spend hours searching for a unique item, while others enjoy the thrill of finding a beautiful item for just a few tens of thousands of dong.
Nguyen Khanh Linh, born in 2002, residing in Quang Phu ward, said she started buying second-hand clothes more than a year ago after watching outfit-matching videos on social media. “Initially, I only thought about buying them because they were cheap, but then I found it very interesting. There are many items with beautiful designs and good quality materials at only a fraction of the price of new clothes. Most importantly, I can find unique items that I won't see many others wearing,” Linh shared. According to Linh, with about 200,000 VND, she can buy many items to create various styles. Meanwhile, if she bought them at regular fashion stores, that amount would only be enough to buy one new shirt. Sharing the same interest, Nguyen Phuong Anh, living in Nguyet Vien ward, said that what she loves about second-hand clothes is their uniqueness. "There are some shirts I bought for only a few tens of thousands of dong, but they have very unique designs. Wearing them for outings or photoshoots creates a different feeling. Moreover, I also think reusing clothes is a small way to reduce waste," Phuong Anh shared.
Beyond simply wanting to dress stylishly, many young people today view buying second-hand clothes as a way to express a green lifestyle. According to shop owners, more and more customers are interested in the quality and origin of products, or prioritize handcrafted recycled items. In Sam Son ward, Ms. Dinh Thi Tuyet's clothing shop is one of the places many young people go to when they want to "hunt" for unique and unusual items. Ms. Tuyet said that the trend of buying second-hand clothes among young people is becoming increasingly clear, especially in the last two years. "Some people come here not to save money, but because they want to wear something different. Second-hand clothes often have unique designs that are hard to find elsewhere. In addition, many young people are also interested in reusing clothes to reduce fashion waste," Ms. Tuyet shared. Besides selling second-hand clothes, Ms. Tuyet also personally repurposes many used items into new ones such as fabric bags, hand-embroidered shirts, or remixes them in a modern style. This makes the store a destination for young people who love creativity and appreciate products with a personal touch.
The development of social media has also contributed to bringing the second-hand trend closer to young people. On platforms like TikTok and Facebook, trending videos reviewing second-hand items, sharing tips on finding beautiful and affordable clothes, or demonstrating how to style vintage outfits attract hundreds of thousands of views. Many young people say they learned about second-hand stores through live sales or product introduction videos on social media. Many even consider hunting for second-hand items as a hobby after school or work. Besides the affordability, uniqueness is also what makes second-hand items increasingly popular. Unlike mass-produced products on the market, many second-hand items are one-of-a-kind. This caters to the desire for uniqueness and the wish to express individuality among today's youth.
However, the second-hand market also places considerable demands on product quality and hygiene. According to shop owners, to retain customers, clothes must be carefully selected, washed, and meticulously processed before being displayed for sale. Recycled products also need to ensure aesthetic appeal to suit the tastes of young people. Besides price, a shift in consumer mindset is considered a major reason for the strong growth of the second-hand trend. Instead of constantly chasing new items, many young people choose to buy less but prioritize uniqueness and long-term usability.
In the context of fast fashion increasingly putting pressure on the environment, the interest of young people in second-hand or recycled products is seen as a positive sign. Not only does it help save money, but this trend also contributes to spreading a more responsible consumer lifestyle in the community. Although there are still differing opinions on using used clothing, it cannot be denied that the second-hand trend is gradually becoming a familiar choice for many young people today.
