After having her eyesight measured and her fundus examined at the Ward Health Station, Ms. Hoang Thi Nguyet, 76 years old, in Block 1, Dong Kinh Ward, shared: I felt my eyes gradually blurring. In recent months, I had to hold my eyes close to the newspaper when I read it. Knowing that there was a free examination program for the elderly, I went for a check-up right away. The doctor diagnosed me with early-stage cataracts and advised early surgery to avoid vision loss. I used to think that blurred vision was a matter of old age. But thanks to the doctor's detailed explanation, I understood that the disease can be treated.
Not only in urban areas, but also in remote medical facilities such as Thai Binh commune, eye health care for the elderly is regularly maintained. In October 2025, the Commune Health Station coordinated with DND International Eye Hospital (Bac Ninh) to examine more than 100 elderly people, detecting more than 30 cases of eye diseases that needed monitoring and treatment.
Mr. Dang Van Ha, Head of Thai Binh Commune Health Station, shared: Thai Binh Commune currently has more than 1,140 elderly people, of which 86 people have eye diseases. Every year, the Station coordinates with specialized hospitals to organize screening, nutrition consultation, exercise instruction and free medicine distribution. Early detection of eye diseases helps the elderly have the opportunity to receive timely treatment, avoiding complications leading to blindness.
According to statistics from the Department of Health, the province currently has more than 104,000 elderly people. Every year, the provincial health sector has coordinated to organize many campaigns for periodic health check-ups, screening for common chronic diseases for the elderly, including eye diseases such as cataracts, dry eyes, glaucoma, etc. From the beginning of 2025 to now, the province has had more than 72,000 people examined and accessed treatment services. All elderly people have electronic health records, helping to monitor their health status.
Along with medical examination and treatment activities, medical units also coordinate with the Provincial Association of the Elderly, mass organizations and local authorities to promote propaganda and mobilize the elderly to have regular check-ups, maintain eye hygiene and have a proper diet.
Ms. Truong Thi Hop, Permanent Vice President of the Provincial Elderly Association, said: Old age brings with it many chronic diseases, of which eye diseases greatly affect the daily life and spirit of the elderly. Therefore, we regularly coordinate with the health sector to organize communication and encourage members to proactively have regular check-ups. In particular, the association regularly coordinates with medical facilities to organize screening examinations, promptly detect eye diseases for the elderly, provide consultations, and provide free treatment drugs. Cases with surgical indications are also supported up to 85% of the total treatment costs.
Thanks to the attention of the government, the health sector and the support of social organizations, the work of preventing and fighting eye diseases for the elderly in the province has gradually become routine, bringing practical results. Not only does it help the elderly maintain healthy eyes, but it also contributes to spreading the message of living happily, living healthily, and living usefully in the community.
