"Soft shield" from the grassroots

Following Resolution No. 35/NQTW of the Politburo on strengthening the protection of the Party's ideological foundation and fighting against erroneous and hostile viewpoints in the new situation, veterans' associations at all levels have implemented synchronously and systematically, forming a "soft shield" from the grassroots. Steering Committee 35 was established at the Central Association and many provinces and cities. Plans and guidelines were issued, creating a basis for effective implementation throughout the system.

Major General Ho Ba Vinh, Deputy Head of the Veterans Affairs Department, Deputy Head of the Steering Committee 35 of the Vietnam Veterans Association Central Committee, said: “Thousands of oral propaganda sessions and thematic activities have created a widespread effect among the people. Through social opinion groups, core members promptly grasp ideological developments and handle sensitive issues from the grassroots level.”

Many models have been replicated: Veterans Association participates in ensuring security, order and traffic safety; mediation team; border and landmark self-management team; veterans club participates in preventing crimes and social evils. Members have contributed ideas to Party and government building, and carried out social supervision and criticism.

At the conference to deploy the task of protecting the ideological foundation in 2025 organized by the Central Committee of the Association, many innovative models were introduced. In particular, the model "Core group of veterans participating in protecting the Party's ideological foundation at the grassroots level" is prominent, implemented according to Project 05 of the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee.

Each core group consists of three to seven members who are veterans with strong political will, knowledge and experience in fighting against erroneous and hostile viewpoints. These groups are directed by the Executive Committee of the Veterans Association at the commune and ward levels, and are professionally guided by the propaganda and mass mobilization agency. Over the years, the groups have promptly detected and resolved conflicts at the grassroots level, advising the Party Committee and the government on preventive solutions.

Sustainable economic development

The movement of veterans helping each other reduce poverty and do good business has become one of the most effective movements of the Vietnam Veterans Association. The Association has implemented many synchronous solutions: Including poverty reduction targets in resolutions at all levels, launching production and business competitions, encouraging the establishment of veteran enterprises, and promoting preferential credit through the Social Policy Bank.

The association has more than 8,200 enterprises, more than 2,000 cooperatives, hundreds of thousands of farms and ranches, creating jobs for more than 781,000 workers who are veterans, former soldiers and children of veterans.

The association has more than 8,200 enterprises, more than 2,000 cooperatives, hundreds of thousands of farms, and family farms, creating jobs for more than 781,000 workers who are veterans, former soldiers, and children of veterans. To date, more than 16,200 temporary and dilapidated houses have been removed; 12,430 "Veteran's Gratitude" houses have been newly built, with a total cost of more than 940 billion VND...

According to the Vietnam Veteran Entrepreneurs Association, veteran enterprises contribute tens of thousands of billions of VND to the budget each year and create hundreds of thousands of jobs. Veteran entrepreneurs also raise their sense of responsibility to society, actively participate in charitable activities, and donate many gratitude houses, charity houses, and comrade houses to policy beneficiaries, meritorious people, and the poor across the country.

Many veteran businessmen have become Labor Heroes in the renovation period: Veteran Le Van Kiem with his great contributions in many fields, especially business and charity activities; veteran Tran Manh Bao, a 2/4 class disabled veteran, who made ThaiBinh Seed Group a pioneer in the Vietnamese seed industry; veteran Hoang Manh Ngoc, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Kolia Limited Liability Company, devoted himself to building a clean agricultural production center combined with eco-tourism and resorts on Phia Den peak, Cao Bang province.

"Passing the torch" to future generations

Over the years, the Vietnam Veterans Association has coordinated with the Vietnam People's Army, the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and localities to organize thousands of traditional talks, hundreds of activities to return to the source, light the fire of gratitude, etc. The programs "Following the footsteps of soldiers", meetings with historical witnesses have become a habit in the journey of educating the younger generation. Or many students in the capital still remember the historical talks of soldiers of Dien Bien, Truong Son, Khe Sanh, Quang Tri Citadel...

According to data from the Hanoi Veterans Association, over the past 5 years, the Association has organized more than 2,800 traditional talks, attracting more than 10,000 students. Many veterans who are businessmen, intellectuals, and teachers shared their journey of starting a business from scratch after leaving the army, helping young people understand more about history, live with goals, be grateful for the past, cherish the present, and step firmly into the future.

According to data from the Hanoi Veterans Association, over the past 5 years, the Association has organized more than 2,800 traditional talks, attracting more than 10,000 students.

Currently, the process of merging organizations and arranging cadres in the veterans association system still has shortcomings and obstacles, making it difficult to perfect the apparatus, especially at the grassroots level. The lack of specialized cadres, especially in communes and wards after the merger, directly affects the quality of association activities. In addition, most members are elderly, so access to digital technology is limited; economic models of members are still fragmented, lacking connections, low efficiency, and difficult to expand in scale.

To overcome this, the association has identified and proposed to the competent authorities to urgently improve the organization after the reorganization; promote training and foster professional skills for association work for grassroots cadres. Veterans' Associations at all levels consider the application of science, technology, engineering and digital transformation through programs to support members in association work; management, production and business. Expanding links and cooperation between economic models is also considered an important direction to improve efficiency and create sustainable livelihoods for members in the new period.

With its mettle, experience and prestige, the Vietnam Veterans Association continues to promote its core role in Party and government building, socio-economic development, traditional education and maintaining political stability.
