At the age of 46, when he should still be the breadwinner of his family, Mr. Le Hoang Tam (residing in Cai Keo hamlet, Quach Pham commune) faced a cruel tragedy when he suffered a sudden stroke two years ago. This incident not only robbed him of his health and ability to work but also plunged his family into extremely difficult circumstances.
Every day, Mr. and Mrs. Le Hoang Tam sell lottery tickets around the Cai Keo market area to make a living.
Born into a poor family with no land for farming and no stable job, Mr. Tam and his wife left their hometown to work in Binh Duong (now Ho Chi Minh City) hoping to improve their lives. However, amidst their struggle for survival in a foreign land, Mr. Tam unexpectedly fell ill. After suffering a stroke, from a healthy man, he became unable to work, and all his daily activities depended on his wife and children.
Recalling that period, Mr. Tam couldn't hide his emotion. What pained him most wasn't his illness, but the feeling of helplessness watching his wife toil, shouldering the burden of the family alone.
Mr. Tam's family currently lives with his wife's family, who are also in difficult circumstances. His mother-in-law suffers from the aftereffects of a stroke, is in poor health, and requires constant care.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Cam, Mr. Tam's wife, said that during her husband's hospitalization, despite the treatment costs exceeding their means, she still tried her best to manage everything with the sole desire of saving her husband's life. After the treatment, the family returned to their hometown to live with Ms. Cam's mother, facing financial difficulties. The hardships compounded when Ms. Cam's mother also suffered from the aftereffects of a stroke, her health was weak, and she needed constant care.
Currently, the family's main source of income depends on selling lottery tickets on the street. Every day, Ms. Cam quietly pushes her husband in his wheelchair to sell lottery tickets to earn money to cover living expenses and medication. The meager income is the only support for the entire family now that they are no longer able to work stably.
After each lottery ticket selling session, Mr. Tâm still persistently exercises his arms and legs, hoping to improve his health and lessen the burden on his wife and children.
Mr. Le Hoang Phuong, Secretary of the Cai Keo Hamlet Party Branch, said: "Mr. Le Hoang Tam's family is considered to be in extremely difficult circumstances in the locality. They have no land for production, suffer from chronic illnesses, and their lives depend on the unstable income from selling lottery tickets, while his wife's family is also struggling. The local government has always provided support to the best of its ability, however, the family still greatly needs the support of the community to have the conditions to stabilize their lives in the long term."
Tâm requires his wife's care and support for all aspects of his daily life.
What Ms. Cam hopes for most right now is for her husband to maintain stable health and for her family to have a sturdy roof over their heads, providing a secure and stable home.
Amidst adversity, the resilience of the hardworking woman and Mr. Tam's efforts to overcome illness have become the driving force for the family to continue to harbor hope for a better future. That journey would be less arduous if it received more attention and support from government agencies, philanthropists, and the community.
