The New York Times reported on May 19th that Google announced it would be improving its search bar for the first time since 2001.
Over the past three years, artificial intelligence (AI) has enabled users to type longer, more complex commands.
According to the tech giant, inspired by commands used for AI, the new search bar will be larger and more interactive. Users will be able to enter longer messages and upload images and videos to the search bar.
Additionally, users can ask further questions to the AI chatbot on Google's main search page. The company will provide digital assistants to automate search processes.
The search feature will be powered by the Gemini 3.5 Flash AI model. According to Google, this model has improved software writing capabilities and performs automated tasks faster and at a lower cost.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai said Gemini's speed and affordability have made widespread deployment of the service possible.
On May 19th, Google announced new AI-powered products including a video tool, an online shopping cart, and an automated email reading and composition system.
The New York Times noted that Google is becoming more deeply involved in the digital economy . Website summarization generates more search results, and longer search queries provide more detailed information about users. The online shopping cart feature makes it easier to connect customers with retailers.
Richard Kramer, a financial analyst at Arete Research, said these changes help Google earn more money from advertising.
In 2024, the number of clicks on Google ads increased by 6%, and the company added a 7% fee per click. The company's annual profits have more than doubled since 2022, reaching $132 billion.
