Many users were surprised when they visited the Google search page and saw the "technology giant" update a new profile picture on the homepage.
According to Google, this new doodle is made to honor International Women's Day and all the progress that has been made towards gender equality. On March 8, 1975, the United Nations first celebrated International Women's Day.
March 8 is also associated with historic Women's Day protests in Saint Petersburg (Russia) and New York City (USA).
These protests, although taking place in different years and locations, shared common goals such as demanding fair jobs, voting rights, and access to public office.
Modern International Women's Day marches address contemporary challenges including gender and racial pay gaps, reproductive rights, and violence prevention. The Doodle celebrates women who have shaped society, advocated for equality, and served as inspirational figures.
Specifically, the International Women's Day doodle features women sharing wisdom across generations in an embroidered quilt symbolizing the progress made over the years.
"The progress women have made over the years would not have been possible without the courageous actions of those who came before them. To those who paved the way and those who are carrying the torch further - Happy International Women's Day!", Google wishes women around the world .
