Hanoi seeks solutions to turn cultural heritage into economic development assets

(CLO) On November 29, at the Hanoi Museum, the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports organized an international seminar "Journey to turn cultural heritage into assets" with the participation of cultural experts and scientists from Vietnam and China.

The event aims to find practical solutions to effectively exploit heritage resources, contributing to the economic growth of the capital.

With a history of more than a thousand years, Hanoi is currently the locality with the densest heritage density in the country: 6,489 historical and cultural relics, nearly 1,800 intangible cultural heritages, 351 national treasures, along with a system of museums, artisans and more than 1,300 traditional craft villages. The city also owns 6 heritages recognized by UNESCO and 22 special national relics. This is an important foundation for Hanoi to develop cultural industry in the digital age.

In recent years, Hanoi has actively promoted international cultural and creative events such as the Creative Design Festival, Digital Art Exhibition, Ao Dai Festival, and Hanoi Food Festival. These activities have contributed to enhancing the image of the capital; according to Time Out magazine (UK), Hanoi ranked 9th in the Top 20 cultural destinations in the world in 2025.

She believes that Hanoi has the responsibility to become a model of cultural development in the digital age, a place where Vietnamese creativity, intelligence and aspirations converge.

At the seminar, Associate Professor Dr. Khu Hanh Phu (China) shared experiences in developing cultural industries associated with heritage in rural areas, especially in modernizing handicrafts, applying 3D technology and attracting young people to return to start businesses.

Contributing her opinion at the discussion, Dr. Tran Thi Thuy (Asia-Pacific Research Institute) pointed out many bottlenecks in Hanoi such as inadequate awareness of the role of cultural industry, lack of models suitable to local characteristics, and scattered technology infrastructure and heritage data.

From there, she proposed that Hanoi needs to promote training on heritage exploitation, build a set of indicators to measure the economic contributions of cultural sectors and develop a digital database on heritage.

The discussion took place in the context that the Government has just approved the Strategy for the development of cultural industries until 2030, aiming for a growth rate of 10%/year and a contribution of 7% to GDP. The opinions contributed at the discussion are expected to help Hanoi effectively exploit heritage resources, promoting the cultural industry to become a new driving force for the economic and social development of the capital.
