Hanoi is bustling with flower season 'calling winter' to the streets

TPO - Hanoi has entered the daisy season, with white flower beds blooming in Tay Tuu and Nhat Tan fields. This year, prolonged heavy rains have flooded many fields and damaged flowers, making flower supplies scarce and prices slightly higher than in previous years.

Chrysanthemums are considered the flower that heralds the arrival of winter because they bloom in November and December each year, when the weather gradually turns cold.

This year, the weather in Northern Vietnam has been unusually erratic, with many heavy rains and deep flooding forcing flower growers to stay up all night bailing out water to save their gardens. Residents of Tay Tuu village say only some of the fields on higher ground bloomed on time. Meanwhile, in Nhat Tan, many flower gardens were flooded and damaged; some households lost almost all of their 10 rows, with only 2 or 3 rows blooming on schedule.

Daisies, also known as chrysanthemums, bloom brightly in the morning light and close their petals as evening falls. This flower possesses an elegant beauty with its pristine white petals and bright yellow center, reminiscent of sunshine. Its simple beauty is nonetheless captivating.

The cool, crisp air of early autumn makes the chrysanthemums even more captivating; the fields of daisies in full bloom signal the arrival of the winter flower season.

"This year there was a lot of flooding, so a lot of the flowers were damaged, which is why they are easier to sell at market prices," shared Ms. Minh, a garden owner in Nhat Tan.

Chrysanthemums bloom quickly and only last for 2-3 weeks, so growers harvest and sell them very fast. The purchase price at the farm is about 90,000 VND/bundle, while the market price ranges from 150,000 to 200,000 VND/large bundle.

Large bundles of chrysanthemums are brought from the gardens to a collection point for processing, soaking in water while waiting for traders to come and buy them. In previous years, the chrysanthemum growing area was large, with many gardens rented out as photo spots, but this year many chrysanthemums have died, and most are harvested for sale.

Chrysanthemums are quite unique flowers, possessing an elegant and delicate beauty, and have long been considered a "signature" feature of Hanoi 's streets, heralding the arrival of winter.
