Professor Tran Thanh Van, also known as Jean Tran Thanh Van, is a French-Vietnamese, born in 1934 in Quang Binh province (now Quang Tri province). In 1953, he went to France to study, began his scientific journey and became a master in the field of theoretical atomic physics. In 2012, he was one of three Asians to be awarded the Tate Medal by the American Physical Society.

His wife, Professor Le Kim Ngoc, was born in Vinh Long. She moved to France in 1953, graduated from Sorbonne University, and then worked at the French National Research Center (CNRS). Her outstanding scientific discovery of the “Thin Cell Layer” method opened up a new direction for plant biotechnology.
Over the past decades, the two Professors have not only affirmed their prestigious position in the international scientific community, but also continuously contributed to the development of science and education in Vietnam through dedicated activities such as organizing international scientific conferences, founding the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE), as well as many programs to support students and children in difficult circumstances.
On this occasion, on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang sent warm and sincere congratulations to the two Professors.
Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang expressed that the promotion of this noble Medal is not only a worthy recognition for the two Professors' tireless dedication to science and the young generation, but also a source of pride for the overseas Vietnamese community and the homeland of Vietnam.
The Deputy Minister affirmed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to coordinate with relevant ministries, branches and localities to accompany and support the two Professors on their journey for a future of Vietnamese science and education that is increasingly developed and integrated, contributing to the era of national growth.
The Deputy Minister sent his best wishes to the two Professors and their families for good health, happiness, and continued achievements, contributing more to the international scientific community, to Vietnam as well as to the Vietnam-France friendship.
