Initially, because the main symptoms are itching and redness, the disease is easily confused with a skin disease. However, the real cause is due to the patient's unsafe eating habits.
Mr. T. regularly eats raw dishes such as blood pudding, rare meat, raw fish salad, animal organs, and unsanitary raw vegetables. These are common sources of infection for large liver flukes and roundworms in cats and dogs.
BSCKII Vu Thi Thu Huong, Director of the Center for Medical Examination and Treatment on Demand and International, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, emphasized: "Unsafe eating habits are the leading risk factor for patients to be infected with parasites."

Blood tests and imaging tests showed that the patient was positive for large liver flukes and roundworms. At the same time, a large liver abscess, approximately 5 cm in size, was detected. A large liver abscess can lead to rupture and sepsis if not treated promptly.
Patients are treated with abscess aspiration, specific antiparasitic drugs, and antibiotics.
After inpatient treatment and follow-up, the liver abscess shrank, the fever and right hypochondrium pain decreased, and the itching almost disappeared. The patient's health is now stable.
Dr. Huong said that parasitic infections are easily overlooked because they start with vague symptoms (such as itching).
When the parasite penetrates deep into the organs, it will enter the liver causing large abscesses (as in the above case), pain and fever. In the eyes and brain, it will cause decreased vision, headaches and convulsions.
Prevention of parasitic infections:
Eat well-cooked food and drink boiled water. Avoid raw and undercooked dishes and animal organs.
Wash vegetables before cooking.
Personal hygiene (wash hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet).
Deworm regularly and keep the living environment clean.
When there are prolonged symptoms such as itching, digestive disorders, or risk of exposure, it is necessary to proactively go for a medical examination for early detection and treatment.
