On May 15th, the Lam Ha Protective Forest Management Board announced the discovery of 257 three-needle pine trees in Nam Ban commune, Lam Ha district (near Da Lat) that had been drilled into at the base and had chemicals poured in to poison them.
Both locations where pine forest was encroached upon are in Lot 7, Section 2, Sub-area 274A. The incident was discovered on May 5th during a patrol and inspection by forest protection and management forces.
The poisoning of pine trees occurred in multiple locations. In the first area, authorities recorded 133 three-needle pine trees whose trunks had been drilled and chemicals poured in, with very recent signs of the damage. The affected forest area is approximately 1,434 square meters.
Not far from there, authorities discovered another 124 pine trees that had been poisoned in a similar manner.
Authorities observed that the pine needles were turning yellow. Under each poisoned tree, there was a hole drilled through the trunk, about the size of a little finger, from which pine resin oozed. Authorities believe at least two types of chemicals, green and yellow, were used, suspected to be herbicides or poisons. All the poisoned trees have been numbered to aid in the investigation.

The Lam Ha Protective Forest Management Board stated that the incident was discovered when a patrol team noticed the tops of many pine trees turning an unusual yellow. According to the agency, the pine trees were poisoned with a large amount of chemicals, making efforts to save them highly ineffective.
The pine tree was poisoned at night.
According to the People's Committee of Nam Ban commune, Lam Ha district, the act of poisoning pine trees to encroach on forest land is causing many difficulties in forest management and protection. The deforestation usually occurs at night. Violators use electric drills to bore into the tree trunks, inject herbicide, and then leave. About a week later, signs of poisoning appear, by which time it is too late to save the trees.
The People's Committee of Nam Ban commune, Lam Ha district, has directed functional forces to increase round-the-clock patrols in key areas. Authorities are continuing to assess the damage, investigate, and track down those involved in the poisoning of the pine forest in sub-area 274A.
