In response to the green living spirit, the Youth Union and Student Council of Nguyen Duy Hieu Secondary School (Hoi An Ward) have implemented the "Exchange expired batteries for gifts" model. The school regularly raises awareness in classrooms and during flag-raising ceremonies about the harmful effects of old batteries on the environment and health. Through this, students are gradually developing the habit of collecting used batteries instead of discarding them indiscriminately.
After being discarded into the environment, used batteries can leak many toxic chemicals, seeping into the soil and water sources, causing pollution and affecting human health. Therefore, proper sorting, collection, and disposal of batteries have become an urgent requirement to protect the living environment and public health.
Ho Thi Tam, Secretary of the Youth Union at Nguyen Duy Hieu Secondary School, said that the "Exchange expired batteries for gifts" model has been maintained for many years to raise students' awareness of hazardous waste disposal. At the recent event alone, students brought in more than 2,500 small batteries and over 600 large batteries. After collection, these batteries were transferred to the Hoi An Ward Youth Union for proper disposal.
At Ngo May Primary School (An Hai Ward), environmental awareness education is implemented through various activities that are close to the students. A highlight is the program to collect used milk cartons.
In addition, the "Exchange Waste for Gifts" program is maintained twice a year to encourage students to sort waste at the source. Recently, the Youth Union organized the "Exchange Waste for Gifts - Connecting with Love" program, attracting a large number of students. At the program, students brought 128kg of paper, 65kg of plastic, and 122kg of various types of cans to exchange for gifts. After selling the recyclable materials, the Youth Union collected approximately 4 million VND to give gifts to 15 underprivileged but academically excellent students at the school.
According to Le Thi Huyen Trang, Secretary of the Youth Union at Ngo May Primary School, environmental protection activities not only help students raise awareness but also foster a sense of responsibility towards the community. Through each program, the children understand that protecting the environment starts with small, everyday actions.

According to Nguyen Ba Duan, Deputy Secretary of the City Youth Union and President of the City Youth Federation, the environmental protection models implemented by the city's youth in recent times have created a positive ripple effect, contributing to raising the awareness of students, union members, and young people about their responsibility to preserve the living environment.
Many activities such as collecting old batteries, exchanging recyclable waste for gifts, "Green Sunday" initiatives, and building green, clean, and beautiful youth-led roads have attracted a large number of young people to participate through practical actions. The City Youth Union always works alongside local Youth Union branches in propaganda, training, and connecting resources to maintain the effectiveness of these models.
In the future, the unit will continue to replicate innovative approaches that are suitable for young people and local realities, contributing to building a green, clean, and beautiful living environment stemming from the awareness of the younger generation.
