100 outstanding voluntary blood donors gathered in Hanoi on this occasion to launch a series of activities of the program to honor outstanding voluntary blood donors nationwide in 2024.

The 100 delegates attending this year's program donated a total of 4,470 units of blood, including 2 delegates who donated blood over 100 times. The youngest delegate, Nguyen Thanh Tai (22 years old, from Thua Thien Hue province), donated blood and platelets 43 times.

Among the 100 delegates this year, there are 78 male delegates, 22 female delegates, 14 delegates from the armed forces, 15 delegates fromthe education sector and 5 delegates are medical staff.

On the sidelines of the event, sharing the story of voluntary blood donation, teacher Le Minh Phuong (Tan Thach A Primary School, Chau Thanh, Ben Tre) humorously said: "That was a very memorable memory."

Having been afraid of needles since childhood, he had many times plucked up the courage to donate blood, but still hesitated. The most recent time, also during a voluntary blood donation event, he saw a female friend, small but very excited and cheerful after donating blood.

Laughing at his fear, he said, I am a healthy man, can't I do meaningful things like that girl? That time, he successfully donated blood. And that was also the first time that helped him overcome his fear of needles. "As long as I am healthy, I will continue to donate until the blood centers no longer accept my blood," Mr. Phuong humorously said.

The longest journey to donate blood urgently to save a person was 60km, in heavy rain, which is an unforgettable mark in the voluntary blood donation journey of Mr. Dao Nhat Khoa (teacher at Ba To High School, Quang Ngai). "At that time, I just hoped that it would be convenient to donate blood in time to save the patient, regardless of the distance or rain," said Mr. Khoa.

When he first started donating blood, he thought it was a quiet job, not thinking about the day he would be honored. He said, as long as there is a patient in need of blood, no matter how far away, as long as his blood is suitable, he is ready to go.

When she was a student, Nguyen Thi Hoa was thin and would secretly donate blood without her parents knowing because she was afraid her family would worry. But since 2015, when she joined the Youth Union of the University of Education, Thai Nguyen University, Hoa has had a deeper understanding of the importance of blood for patients, and has been able to convince her family members.

Not only is she a regular blood donor 4 times a year, Ms. Hoa is also the person who directly directs the organization of blood donation activities, manages and works with the school's Youth Club to mobilize voluntary blood donation.

“After each blood donation, I feel happy because I can live to give, save another life, and have another chance to spread small meaningful actions to the community,” Ms. Hoa shared.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Mien (teacher at Huu San Secondary School, Bac Quang, Ha Giang) has been involved in blood donation since 2008.

A special memory during Ms. Mien's 16 years of blood donation was in 2023, when Bac Quang District Hospital had a female patient with hemorrhage and urgently needed type B blood for transfusion. After hearing the announcement from the Bac Quang District Youth Union, Ms. Mien traveled alone by motorbike nearly 40km to donate blood that night.

After donating blood, it was almost midnight when Ms. Mien returned home. Her two children were already fast asleep. Although it was a bit tiring, she did not mind, because she knew that someone would be saved and would soon return home to their loved ones like her.

In 2009, when he was still a student, Mr. Tran Duy Phuong (currently an accountant at Phong Phu A Primary School, Tra Vinh) donated blood voluntarily. Later, when he went to take care of his father in the hospital and needed a blood transfusion, he understood the meaning of blood donation even more and participated more often.

In particular, his wife accompanied him on this volunteer journey. Therefore, when the whole society was isolated due to Covid-19, they traveled from Tra Vinh to Can Tho to promptly support the emergency blood shortage and treatment here. Although they had to accept isolation at home, they were both happy to help their fellow countrymen in difficult times.

Participating in blood donation since 2004, Ms. Nguyen Bich Lan (teacher at Xuan Hong Primary School, Bu Dang, Binh Phuoc) has donated blood 50 times but each time still has the same feelings as the first time donating blood: nervous and excited.

Ms. Lan said that during her teaching in class, she always talks about the value of blood donation so that students know how to share with the less fortunate.

Teachers have contributed to spreading information about voluntary blood donation, giving is forever to help patients in need of blood for treatment and emergency care to prolong their lives. The examples of teachers help children form their personalities, so that when they grow up, they will be useful people, contributing positively to society.
