The dangers from "street monsters"

Homemade vehicles carrying oversized loads and driving recklessly not only violate the law but also pose a potential danger to other road users. Despite strict enforcement by authorities, these dangerous vehicles continue to roam freely on the roads.

Images of overloaded trucks squeezing around other vehicles are a daily occurrence on both urban and rural roads. Running red lights, honking incessantly, encroaching on lanes and sidewalks, stopping and parking directly in the middle of the road, driving against the flow of traffic, speeding... have become bad habits and are no longer unfamiliar to road users. People traveling alongside these "menaces" can only shake their heads in dismay and keep their distance for fear of becoming victims.

According to observations by reporters, in urban areas such as Rach Gia, Long Xuyen, and Chau Doc, it's not uncommon to see motorized tricycles and handcarts with the engine at the front and a makeshift cargo bed or platform at the back, loaded with bulky goods. In urban areas, the high demand for goods transportation means these makeshift vehicles thrive due to their convenience, ability to carry large quantities of goods, and access to areas inaccessible to trucks.

To make a living and shorten travel times, many people choose to carry as much goods as possible on their vehicles. What's concerning is that most of these vehicles are old, modified, and structurally unsound, yet they still circulate on the roads, causing numerous traffic safety issues. There have been many traffic accidents involving these types of vehicles. "When traffic police patrol, this situation improves, but when the authorities aren't around, it goes back to how it was before. I understand they're doing it for their families, but they should also think about the safety of others. Driving these makeshift vehicles recklessly like this needs to be severely punished to ensure the safety of road users," suggested Mr. Nguyen Van Dinh, a resident of Rach Gia ward.

Mr. Tran Dang Khoa, a resident of Phu Hoa commune, recounted that during the National Day holiday on September 2nd, he encountered a three-wheeled vehicle carrying sheets of corrugated iron several meters long, traveling from Ha Hoang Ho street towards the center of Long Xuyen ward. The rear of the vehicle scraped against a motorbike traveling in the same direction. Fortunately, the motorbike rider only suffered minor scratches. “I saw the danger and slowed down behind it. They were carrying such a bulky load and still tried to overtake, causing a collision. I don't know how they drive like that. When going to work, they should value their own lives and the lives of others. When you see vehicles carrying bulky construction materials like iron, steel, and corrugated iron on the road, you should stay far away,” Mr. Khoa said angrily.

Overloaded and bulky vehicles not only cause traffic congestion but also easily lead to collisions with other vehicles. Furthermore, carrying excessive loads can make it difficult for drivers to control the steering wheel, especially when turning left, right, or navigating curves. Mr. Nguyen Van Tung, a resident of Chau Doc ward, said: “I see overloaded and oversized motorbikes on the road every day, especially around Chau Doc market. Not only do they carry oversized loads, sometimes tens of meters long, but they also drive recklessly. Such transportation easily causes accidents, endangering themselves and others. I hope the authorities will increase patrols and strictly punish these ‘road menaces,’ contributing to ensuring the safety of the people.”

To reduce the risk of traffic disorder and safety issues related to vehicles carrying oversized loads, the Traffic Safety Committee, the police force, and local authorities need to intensify propaganda and raise public awareness of traffic laws and regulations, discouraging the use of makeshift vehicles carrying oversized or overloaded cargo. Simultaneously, increased inspections and enforcement of violations are necessary to minimize the dangers facing road users.
