Hieu Giang develops agriculture along the value chain.

QTO - In recent years, Hieu Giang commune has focused on restructuring its agricultural sector in conjunction with building new rural areas; the main focus being the application of science and technology to production, forming concentrated high-tech and organic agricultural production areas, and strengthening linkages to build value chains for key crops and livestock with competitive advantages. This approach contributes to increasing the value of agricultural products, stabilizing output, building brands, and developing sustainable agriculture.

Promoting production linkages along the value chain.

Hieu Giang commune has a strong advantage in agricultural production with a large area and diverse crop structure. Currently, the entire commune maintains a stable rice cultivation of over 2,400 hectares, yielding more than 13,000 tons annually; and 1,408 hectares of rubber, producing approximately 1,600 tons of dry latex. Maintaining a stable production scale is an important foundation for reorganizing production towards a commodity-based approach and establishing consumption linkages. To overcome the fragmented production and dependence on traders, Hieu Giang focuses on building "four-party" linkage models, connecting production with processing and consumption.

To date, two effective supply chains have been established in the area, including 120 hectares of organic rice and 10.5 hectares of five-veined melaleuca trees, with businesses guaranteeing product purchase. Through these supply chains, farmers receive support with seeds, input materials, guidance on production processes, and guaranteed post-harvest purchase. As a result, intermediary costs are reduced, productivity and product quality are improved, output is more stable, contributing to increased income and reduced market risks.

Along with this, the production structure has been adjusted towards improving land use efficiency. Nearly 120 hectares of production forest land and low-yield orchard land have been converted to growing medicinal plants and fruit trees. Livestock farming has also gradually shifted from small-scale to farm and family farm models, with more than 20 large-scale models contributing to increased added value and ensuring disease safety. The movement to plant production forests and develop hill and garden economies has proven effective. Nearly 2,000 out of 9,841 hectares of production forests have been certified with the international FSC standard, increasing their value and moving towards sustainable forest development.

The cooperative economy continues to be strengthened, playing a "bridge" role between farmers and businesses. Hieu Giang commune has 6 agricultural cooperatives, of which 4/6 participate in value chain linkages; 3/6 cooperatives have been recognized by the Provincial People's Committee as exemplary advanced units. The cooperatives are increasingly proactive in providing services, organizing concentrated production, and linking product consumption for their members.

Applying science and technology to production

Alongside expanding production linkages, Hieu Giang has identified the application of science and technology as a crucial solution to improve the productivity, quality, and competitiveness of agricultural products. New high-yield rice varieties with short growing seasons, adapted to weather conditions and market demands, have been introduced into production. Organic and pre-organic farming models are gradually being replicated, contributing to reduced input costs and improved product quality and value. Mechanization is being promoted in land preparation, planting, and harvesting, helping to reduce labor and improve production efficiency.

In the forestry sector, the locality is implementing intensive forest planting focusing on large timber, establishing FSC-certified forest areas, and enhancing economic value and sustainability. The application of science and technology and safe production standards also facilitates traceability, meeting market demands. Linking production with brand building, Hieu Giang focuses on developing distinctive products under the "One Commune One Product" (OCOP) program. To date, the entire commune has 5 products that have achieved OCOP 3-star standard.

According to Mai Chiem Hiep, Head of the Economic Department of Hieu Giang commune, in the coming time, Hieu Giang commune will continue to maintain and expand existing linkages, attract more businesses to invest in clean and organic agriculture, and strive to develop 3-4 more OCOP products achieving 3 stars or higher.

With synchronized solutions ranging from production organization and strengthening value chain linkages to the application of science and technology, agriculture in Hieu Giang commune is gradually transforming towards a modern, efficient, and sustainable direction. As value chains are increasingly consolidated, commodity production areas continue to expand, and agricultural product brands are affirmed, agriculture will continue to be an important pillar of the local economy, contributing to increased income, improved living standards for people, and the development of a more prosperous new rural area.
