Readers experience the convenience of electronic publishing.

Along with the development of artificial intelligence (AI), big data and language processing technology, domestic publishers and e-book businesses are proactively applying technology to production, distribution and reader service activities.

Many initiatives aimed at improving user experience and encouraging reading and lifelong learning habits have been widely implemented, creating a clear mark in the digital transformation process of the publishing industry.

According to data from the Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution, in 2024, e-publishing will account for about 8.9% of the total number of published books and e-book downloads and audiobook listening will increase by more than 200% compared to 2023.

In fact, the publishing industry is shifting quite rapidly from traditional printing to digitalization, while creating conditions for applying additional features, such as: Word lookup, parallel translation, listening... Voiz FM application in Vietnam is increasing in downloads, also testing upgrading AI voice technology that is difficult to distinguish between "artificial" voices and real human voices.

In addition, international ebook solutions provide more features to meet the growing needs of readers: Searching the entire book and across publishers, translating text into 42 languages, bookmarking books, and creating usage statistics charts.

E-book company Waka has recently developed a parallel reading-translation feature, helping users read and learn at the same time on the same interface. With just a touch, readers can look up vocabulary, listen to standard pronunciation of foreign languages, see illustrative examples and compare definitions from reputable sources.

E-publishing accounts for about 8.9% of all published books, and e-book downloads and audiobook listening are expected to increase more than 200% by 2023.

Contextual understanding technology makes translations natural, intimate and emotionally appropriate, overcoming the problem of dry machine translation. In addition, users can take notes, save vocabulary and favorite ideas, forming a personal "electronic learning notebook", creating a seamless and inspiring reading-learning experience.

The foreign book warehouses of many publishing units are continuously expanding, meeting the diverse needs of readers at different levels, aiming to build a comprehensive reading-learning ecosystem so that readers can find sources of knowledge suitable for their interests, levels and personal goals.

Digital transformation of the publishing industry does not stop at the form of changing from printed books to digital, but is a comprehensive change to create a multi-dimensional experience for readers. The publishing model is changing more and more, helping authors and publishers to participate faster, reduce printing and distribution costs, and increase interaction with readers.

In addition, users can take notes, save vocabulary and favorite ideas, forming a personal "electronic study notebook", creating a seamless and inspiring reading-learning experience.

Director of the Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution Nguyen Nguyen said: “The stable development of the publishing industry will contribute to creating a sustainable market. Besides the common problem, each unit needs to have its own strategy to connect with the market. From there, answer the question: What is the purpose of digital transformation? What benefits do units gain from digital transformation? And the new market of e-books needs to be exploited effectively soon.”

The Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution recommends that units need to increase investment in human resources, technical infrastructure, modern technology, making e-publishing a spearhead and driving force for development. In addition, improve the quality of state management in this field with solutions such as: perfecting the legal corridor, building and perfecting digital infrastructure from central to local levels, developing shared databases, creating a national database on publishing, printing and distribution; increasing the application of Big Data and AI technology...

In a broader perspective, around the world , digital publishing platforms have quickly shaped a smart reading ecosystem, personalized according to user behavior and needs. In developed markets such as the US, Japan, Korea, etc., e-publishing is a comprehensive learning, interaction and entertainment channel in a seamless environment.

From conferences and seminars organized by the publishing, printing and distribution industry, experts have commented: Focusing on “digitalizing experiences” and putting readers at the center of innovation is the right path for global publishing trends. Compared to the world, the technology gap is gradually narrowing as many domestic publishing units and businesses proactively develop language technology, voice reading and contextual interactive tools.

However, to form a strong e-publishing industry, in addition to familiar solutions, Vietnam needs to continue investing in digital copyright, payment platforms, and at the same time perfect the legal corridor compatible with the international creative economic model.
