In the Asian Futsal Championship final last night (February 7th), the Indonesian futsal team held a huge advantage, leading 3-1, then 4-3, and finally 5-4 against Iran. However, they were ultimately pegged back to 5-5 after two extra time periods. In the penalty shootout, Indonesia lost 4-5 to Iran, thus painfully losing the championship.

Speaking after the match, coach Hector Souto highlighted two weaknesses of Indonesia when facing Asia's number one team. He said: “In the future, we need to improve our ball distribution and attacking system. In the domestic league, the pace is only at one level. When competing in Southeast Asia, the pace is higher, and in Asia it's much faster. This is something everyone could clearly see today.”

He acknowledged that Iran played very well, but Indonesia also showed the ability to compete on equal terms with their opponent, who is known as the "king of Asian futsal".

"Iran played well today, but we were still able to compete. However, we made some mistakes in the first half, giving them opportunities to score, and almost costing us dearly. Such errors should not have happened in a final against Iran," added coach Souto.

Although Indonesia couldn't lift the trophy, coach Hector Souto still expressed great pride in his players, especially after Indonesia scored 5 goals against Iran, a rare feat against the most successful team in Asian futsal history.

“Today is the day to talk about how well we played. It was a fantastic tournament. We scored five goals against Iran in the final and took them to a sixth penalty shootout before finally losing. As you all said in Indonesia, I am very proud,” coach Hector Souto affirmed.

Besides technical aspects, the coach also pointed out fundamental issues in Indonesian futsal: "We still face many difficulties. Many stadiums are not up to standard. Infrastructure and facilities need improvement."
