Coach Mai Duc Chung returns to training with the Vietnamese women's national team: 'I still have the desire to contribute'

On the afternoon of January 14th, the Vietnamese women's national team officially assembled and began their first training session at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center, marking the start of their preparation phase for the 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup.

Coach Mai Duc Chung shared his thoughts on the decision to return.

Immediately after assembling, the players took to the training field with enthusiasm, a positive team atmosphere, and high concentration. According to the plan, the Vietnamese women's national team will train in Hanoi for more than three weeks before heading to China for a training camp.

During their domestic training camp, the team is scheduled to play two friendly matches against the Uzbekistan women's team in Hanoi on January 26th and 29th. In early February, Coach Mai Duc Chung and his team will travel to China for training to improve their fitness and refine their playing style, before returning to Vietnam for a short Lunar New Year break and rejoining the team.

Speaking before the training session, head coach Mai Duc Chung said he decided to return to lead the Vietnamese women's national team after a period of rest, when his health had recovered and he still had many aspirations to contribute to the team. The veteran coach emphasized that the overarching goal throughout this training camp is to improve physical fitness, maintain a pressing, short-passing style of play suitable for the Vietnamese players' physique, and improve finishing efficiency.

The Vietnamese women's national team will travel to China for training.

In the first training camp of 2026, coach Mai Duc Chung summoned 28 players, including 23 who participated in the SEA Games 33, and boldly gave opportunities to many young faces, including players from the U.19 age group. The coaching staff will continue to monitor and evaluate the young players currently competing in the national U.19 women's football championship, and will consider adding them to the squad after the tournament concludes on February 7th.

Coach Mai Duc Chung remains determined to stay with the Vietnamese women's national team for the important journey ahead.

According to the plan, the Vietnamese women's national team will train in China from February 7th to 14th, 2026, to gain experience, refine their playing style, and aim for the best possible form before entering the continental competition.

At the 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup finals, held in Australia from March 1, 2026, the Vietnamese women's national team is in Group C along with Japan, India, and Taiwan. According to the format, the top two teams from each group and the two best third-placed teams will advance to the quarter-finals.
