In the opening match of the 33rd SEA Games on the evening of December 5, the Vietnamese women's team won 7-0 against Malaysia. This was the heaviest defeat of the Malaysian women's team in the history of the SEA Games.

Speaking after the match, Malaysia women's team coach Joel Cornelli admitted: "Of course, when the match started, we did not think we would lose 0-7 to the Vietnamese women's team. We clearly understood the difference in physical strength, ranking and quality between the two teams."
Coach Cornelli said the early goals made Malaysia lose all their organization and confidence. He added: “They scored very early and we lost confidence. We tried to keep the team structure, but the Vietnamese women's team changed the way they played constantly. We lost control in the first half. Malaysia left too many gaps. The difference in level between the two teams was too big.
The Vietnamese women’s team has been playing together for a long time. Player number 23 (Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy) is a very excellent player. They are strong, proactive and decisive.”
The Brazilian strategist admitted he needs more time to rebuild the team, which has not won a SEA Games medal since 1995.
“I have only been working here for 6 months. We need more time to prepare, to integrate and develop the young players. We will try our best, hopefully in the next match we can play better and regain our spirit,” he said.

In the second match, the Malaysian women's team will face Myanmar, who just won 2-1 against the Philippines in the opening match. Coach Cornelli affirmed that the home team still has a chance if they improve their defense. He said: "We will start preparing for the match against Myanmar tomorrow.
Today was a bad day for us. I will try to help the players regain their confidence. We still have two games ahead. I hope the players will fight.”
