U22 Indonesia was put in a very difficult situation after losing to U22 Philippines in the opening match of men's football at the 33rd SEA Games. To continue, U22 Indonesia must beat U22 Myanmar in the final round and hope that the match between U22 Vietnam and Malaysia will have a win or lose result.
If U22 Vietnam and Malaysia draw, the two teams will advance to the semi-finals. At that time, U22 Indonesia will become the former SEA Games champion.
Faced with that situation, coach Indra Sjafri called on his players to focus on the match with U22 Myanmar.
Bola newspaper quoted Mr. Indra Sjafri: "We have to focus on winning against U22 Myanmar. This victory is very important and that is all U22 Indonesia can do at the moment. We cannot control the result of the match between Vietnam and Malaysia."
Commenting on the loss to U22 Philippines, Mr. Indra Sjafri admitted that there were two reasons for U22 Indonesia's defeat. First, the Indonesian players had difficulties because it was their first match at the SEA Games. Second, U22 Philippines was used to the intensity of the competition (having played 1 match with Myanmar) and also played too well.
Coach Indra Sjafri confirmed that he will let his players play aggressively against Myanmar. He also called on the players to stop paying attention to the fans' judgments and focus on the sole goal of winning against Myanmar.
"Outsiders certainly have the right to comment on U22 Indonesia. But the important thing is that I am still here and have the responsibility to help U22 Indonesia win against U22 Myanmar" - Mr. Sjafri concluded.
