Students change direction when a series of "hot" majors abandon traditional combination admissions

(Baohatinh.vn) - Many 12th grade students in Ha Tinh are rushing to change their review direction to prepare well for the 2026 university entrance exam.

The news that some universities are changing the exam blocks and removing some combinations has made many students and parents worried. Especially for those who are studying block C00 (Literature, History, Geography), switching to alternative combinations such as C03 (Math, Literature, History) or D14 (English, Literature, History) is not easy, because these are combinations that require a completely different knowledge and skill foundation compared to block C00 that students have studied before.

Aiming to pass the Oriental Studies entrance exam at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Vietnam National University, Hanoi, Nguyen Thanh Nguyet (12A6 student, Nguyen Van Troi High School, Mai Phu Commune) always seriously studied for the exam. However, recently, the announcement from the university forced the female student to adjust her entire plan.

“The C00 combination is no longer used for admission to 15 training majors at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, forcing me to study English to apply for the D14 combination. I am quite worried because my foreign language knowledge is not good while I do not have much time to review for the exam. In the near future, I will consult some foreign language centers to register for additional classes” - Nguyen Thanh Nguyet expressed.

Students of Cam Xuyen High School are worried because many schools have stopped considering traditional combinations.

The change in the admission method not only makes students worried but also makes many students have to choose to give up their favorite major. This year, the rate of schools and majors recruiting for block C00 has decreased sharply, notably some schools that were previously chosen by many students such as: Political Officers, Border Guard Academy, Social Sciences and Humanities... no longer recruit in this group.

Bui Ngoc Anh (12A6 grade student, Cam Binh High School, Cam Binh Commune) said: "Because I studied well in block C00, I planned to study journalism at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Hanoi National University. However, this year, the school no longer accepts the C00 group, so I feel quite regretful. Therefore, I am forced to switch to studying pedagogy because the school still retains the same admission group."

Faced with this reality, many parents also expressed concern because this change makes it difficult for their children to pass the university entrance exam. “I always support my child to pursue the C00 block because he is very good at social subjects and often wins many awards organized by the school. Now that the majors he plans to apply for no longer consider the C00 block, I am really worried and it is quite difficult to orient my child's career,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh (Vinh Phu village, Cam Xuyen commune).

According to a survey of the wishes of many students taking the C00 exam, the majority said they would take the exam for teacher training schools because the majors are keeping the same combination.

It is undeniable that education needs to innovate to keep up with the development of society and the need to train high-quality human resources. However, any adjustment needs to have a long-term roadmap, needs to be carefully researched and announced early so that students can prepare.

From a training perspective, Ms. Le Thi Bao Thanh (homeroom teacher of class 12A6, Cam Xuyen High School) commented: "Block C00 is not only an exam combination but also an aspect of educational thinking, where students develop language skills, critical thinking, social awareness... This combination is gradually eliminated without careful consideration and a suitable roadmap, which will have a profound impact on both the school system and future human resources."

Every year there are a few small changes, each school has a few different methods, forcing students to "chase" the exam, study according to the trend, and not be able to have a long-term orientation. From that, Ms. Thanh thinks that it is necessary to regulate the university admission method to keep it stable for at least 3 years.

"The 3-year cycle allows students from grades 10 to 12 to clearly understand the admission criteria, choose a combination of subjects and practice appropriate skills. The need to maintain a stable university admission method not only helps reduce "shock" for students and schools, but also creates a solid foundation for career orientation and student capacity development in accordance with the spirit of innovation" - Ms. Le Thi Bao Thanh expressed.

As of December 5, more than 20 universities have announced their expected enrollment plans for 2026, and many universities have adjusted their admission combinations. The University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi has just announced that 15/30 majors will not enroll in block C00 in 2026. This includes many "hot" majors such as Journalism, Oriental Studies, Korean Studies, Public Relations, Psychology...

In addition, the Political Officer School no longer uses the C00 and A00 combinations (Math, Physics, Chemistry). The Border Guard Academy has abandoned C00 and A01 (Math, Physics, English). The University of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi plans to abandon the D01 (Math, Literature, English) and B00 (Math, Chemistry, Biology) combinations when considering graduation exam scores...
