Leah Taylor, 45, a school bus driver for Hancock High School, said she suffered an asthma attack and fainted while driving with nearly 20 students. At that moment, the vehicle began to veer off course and showed signs of losing control.
Five students from the school quickly coordinated to handle the situation. Jackson Casnave managed to grab the steering wheel in time when he realized the car was veering off course. At the same time, Darrius Clark, a sixth-grade student, slammed on the brakes to slow down, although the sudden braking nearly sent him flying forward.
In the back, Kayleigh Clark immediately called 911 for emergency assistance. Destiny Cornelius searched for Taylor's asthma medication. Meanwhile, the other students tried to remain calm and reassure their fellow passengers.
The students' seamless coordination helped bring the bus to a safe stop before rescue forces arrived. The following day, Ms. Taylor personally thanked each student, emphasizing that "their actions helped prevent a particularly dangerous situation."
Dr. Melissa Saucier, the school principal, shared: “We commend the students. Their actions demonstrate a sense of responsibility, leadership, and proactive adaptation in critical moments.”
