On December 1, at Hoa Dong Kindergarten in the Hoa Thinh flood-affected area, the school yard was dry after many days of flooding. Vice Principal Do Thi Thu Hien was busy going to each class, asking each child what the floodwaters had washed away.
Little lips chattered about the favorite pink school bag stained with mud, or the pretty shirt swept away by floodwaters.
After listening, Ms. Hien and the teachers gathered the students and personally distributed brand new backpacks and boxes of colored pencils donated by benefactors in Ho Chi Minh City.
On the first day back to school, every child's face lit up with joy at seeing their friends again, touching their toys and continuing to learn the lessons they had left unfinished before the flood.

The school also managed to borrow books from other kindergartens to distribute to the children. "We are still waiting for new books to be sent. In the meantime, the school has borrowed books from places that have extra books so that the children can study immediately," said Ms. Hien.
Not only Hoa Dong, many other schools in the flood-prone area of Hoa Thinh and many places in the old Phu Yen are also gradually stabilizing. Books have arrived, new clothes are available, the brown color of mud has been replaced by joy and excitement of children.
