Civil servants and public employees will have 9 consecutive days off for Lunar New Year 2026
As Thanh Nien reported, the Prime Minister has agreed with the proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs on the plan for Lunar New Year and National Day holidays in 2026. The Minister of Home Affairs shall notify administrative agencies, public service agencies, political organizations, socio-political organizations, enterprises and workers according to regulations.
Accordingly, civil servants and public employees will have the Lunar New Year 2026 holiday from Saturday, February 14, 2026 (December 27, year of the Snake) to Sunday, February 22, 2026 (January 6, year of the Horse). Thus, the Binh Ngo New Year holiday for civil servants and public employees will last 9 consecutive days, including 5 Tet holidays according to the provisions of the Labor Code and 4 weekend days.
Ho Chi Minh City students hope for 16 days off for Tet
Statistics show that in the past 8 years, students in Ho Chi Minh City have had at least 9 days off for Lunar New Year (including statutory holidays and weekends if any during the holiday) and at most 16 days off.
Ho Chi Minh City has not yet announced the official 2026 Tet holiday schedule for students.
It is known that the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City plans to propose to the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City about the 2026 Tet holiday schedule for Ho Chi Minh City students of about 2 weeks.
According to the plan, students in Ho Chi Minh City will have Tet holiday from February 7, 2026 (20th of the 12th lunar month) to February 22, 2026 (6th of the 1st lunar month). Thus, if counting the holidays according to regulations and Saturdays and Sundays, students in Ho Chi Minh City can have 16 days off for the Lunar New Year 2026.

Many parents in Ho Chi Minh City said they hope the city will soon officially announce the holiday schedule for students so they can proactively arrange and buy train and bus tickets if they travel back to their hometowns.
"16 days off for Tet is fine. Last year, there were only 9 days off, which I think is too little. It's difficult to send the children back to their hometowns far away," said Ms. Nguyen Thuy Van, a parent in An Hoi Tay ward, Ho Chi Minh City.
"I think it would be appropriate if students in Ho Chi Minh City were given a 16-day Tet holiday, because many families have their hometowns far away, so children have more time to experience Tet with their families and relatives. These are useful lessons for children. However, if I had a choice, I would still prefer a longer holiday after Tet rather than a holiday too early before Tet. Because before Tet, parents are still busy working, and children who are given a holiday too early will have difficulty being looked after and ensuring safety, especially for preschool children," said Mr. Chi Hung, resident of Chanh Hung ward, Ho Chi Minh City.
